I am just wondering what to expect at my first appointment with a Rheutologist or whatever they are called. Also, does anyone know if RA is affected or worsened by being overweight? Any answers would be greatly appreciated! Thanks Amanda

I would say, on your first visit to be prepared with a list of symptoms and issues that you've been having and how long you've been having them including difficulty completing daily tasks, etc. And a list questions of all the questions that you have for the rheumatologist. I always forget my questions if I don't write them down, because I'll be busy answering the doctor's questions and I get off track. The doctor will go over your medical history in detail, will want to look at your joints, will probably order either x-rays, labs or both. The doctor may want to start you on medication right away and then follow up with you to see how you're doing on the meds. If you're not flaring and feel good at the time of the appointment, don't be afraid to call back for another appointment as soon as you start having problems again.
As far as your question about weight, I'd say yes, being overweight can really make a difference. Extra weight can place more stress on certain joints, espcially the hips and knees and that stress leads to more pain and flare ups. More pain keeps one from exercising, causing deconditioning and a loss of flexibility, range of motion and strength. This in turn can lead a person to be even more sedentary and then gain more weight. It's a cycle. I know how hard it is to exercise and remember to eat well when you're in a lot of pain, but it's really important, even when you're feeling really stiff and sore to at least stretch or swim or keep up with some light activity.
I hope this is helpful. If you get a chance, I've written several articles in the past several months on trying to sneak in more exercise (like dancing, taking the stairs at work or doing modified yoga) and eating healthy.
Take care and kepp us posted on your progress. Christine Miller
