Hi all, I am an occupational therapy student who is doing a project on RA and its impact on everyday life. I was wondering if anyone had encountered any adaptive equipment which has really helped them improve overall function at home or work ? i'd love to hear your thoughts and personal story as well. Thanks Zoe
Hi, I am a COTA/L and have RA. I have had RA for 18 years. I am very glad to hear that you are a student of OT. Honestly I work in a subacute facility 40 hr a week and feel that some of my coworkers are not educated well in the area of arthritis. I work with O.T.'s that have describe to nursing as Rheumatiod effecting long joints only. Me being a COTA and having this disabilty was shocked and stunned because it can effect muscles, eyes, cardiac, lungs and of course the joints. Personally the only thing that has helped me is knowing the energy conservation techniques and built up items for home usage. Built up peeler, electric jar opener and a electric car starter has been a big help. As a therapist if you can have a gentle approach and be patient you will be able to help many with RA.
