My Father, who is 82, now is in the advanced stage of Prostate Cancer. He has been living with this disease for 11 years, has had hormone treatment, and now is getting chemo. I'm concerned that getting the chemo at this stage of the disease will decrease his quality of life dramatically. He is very active and has other health issues such as diabetes and a pace maker. His PSA has doubled over the past 8 weeks. Can anyone give me some idea as to the rate of progression of prostate cancer once it is in the bones? We are all very scared and just want to know what to expect. Any help would be great.

Dear Joanne: I am not a physician, though I'm called the "patient-expert" on this site. I would suggest you go to the National Cancer Institute site (cancer.gov) and enter the keywords "chemotherapy" and "prostate cancer," to see how the NCI feels about chemo for older men. Good luck.
