I was wondering if anyone had experienced phlebitis as a side affect of Forteo? My mom is 78 and has been on Forteo for 5 months. She has started getting an unusual swelling on her right hand, it turns red and swells and then goes away. In the morning it is back and then it goes away again. Can anyone let me know if they have had similiar side affects of Forteo?

Eli Lily doesn't list swelling or phlebitis as a side effect. Make sure you check with the Dr. treating this and inform him or her of this problem. The biggest problem with trying to decide if a symptom is from a drug or something else is a really hard call. Unfortunately many things can cause this type of problem other than the drug, but only the Dr. can determine this. I realize it would be easy to think it's Forteo because of the timing and onset of symptoms, but you need to check *all* possibilities and have the Dr. treat it.
