Hi - I'm writing on behalf of my mother, 84, who has been on Forteo 2 years. The doctor would like to keep her on it, if the insurance company will approve it. Is there information on patients who have taken the drug longer than two years?

Here's some history on my mom and her osteoporosis:

She was hospitalized with a fracture just before going on Forteo and hasn't had any fractures since. Her bone density was very low (still in the minus category, but better now than it was then) and she was (is) quite bent over. She can't take Fosamax (had to have a balloon procedure when she was on that).

I know that the greatest Forteo benefit occurs within the first year or two, but, if the medicine could help keep her from getting worse, without adverse affects (assuming the cancer risk is low), I'd be in favor of it.

We see to it that her calcium intake is sufficient and that she gets her Vitamin D.

She is in generally good health otherwise.
