"You always have a headache!"
That's what one of my Team Leaders said to me the other day I just turned around & walked away, feeling hurt & sad How Dare she, she has no idea what I go thru, turned out that afternoon on the way home from work my then headache turned into a full blown Migraine with pain off the scale, it's day 5 & it's still with me, but not as bad as when it started. I was so upset & hurt by her comments, I unfortunately expect that type of comment from my husband (I'm still working on him But at work I have supportive co workers & my Manager is really good about my migraines. I was just so taken back by that comment |

Jewels,
I'm so sorry about your team leaders comment. Sometimes people just don't realize how hurtful words can be. Some of those same people think a migraine is "just a headache". They just don't understand what all we go through-AND we go through it and still manage to be at work. My DH is getting better, but a comment like that would come from my boss-even though he's my doc! Hang in there-hopefully they will "get it" one day. Lynn |

Jewels--
I think most of us have heard that one at one time or another. Even supportive people don't always get it. I think it's because since we do have so many, we have to learn to be functional with them. There's a great post that you can give people who don't get it about migraines but I'm really computer illiterate so don't know how to paste it here. You might look for it. I also like to keep a fact or two handy for when somebody pops up with that one. One of my newest favorites is that worldwide an estimated 300 million people suffer from migraines. In fact the World Health Organization considers migraines to be one of the most debilitating diseases in the world. I usually mention, that yeah, I do have a lot of headaches, but I sure have a lot of company. Tracie |

I would like to say "YEA, I ALWAYS HAVE A HEADACHE!" It's just a matter of severity. Even on good days, I have a small headache. It never goes away.
So I would probably have snapped back at her. It is tiring and frustrating to always have a headache. Welcome to my world. I have told those closest to me that I always have a headache, it just varies in strength so there's no need to ask me if I feel okay. I NEVER DO! My DH has finally learned to stop asking but I have noticed he asks "how do you feel" a lot. I think that's his replacement question. I've told him that when he sees me cleaning or chatting with someone or making love, I'm doing it with some pain. That's just the way it is! Don't let her comments hurt you. You have a handicap she doesn't have so she's just plain ignorant. We love you. Take Care. Namaste' |

I'm so sorry you had to deal with such insensitivity. If you're feeling strong, you might ask her to get what your world is like. Something like: "Not quite always, but way more often than I'd like. Actually, I have a Migraine about ___ times a month. They usually last about ___ hours/days. Imagine the worst headache you've ever had and then imagine it's pounding and making you nauseous and (fill in the blanks)... That's what my life is like." - Megs |

I can't take the hurt of that insensitive oaf's remark away. I can, and will, tell you I'm sorry she said it. I can, and will, tell you that such remarks hurt me, too. It doesn't matter whether they are made to you or me. They hurt. And, I can, and will, tell you that I, and the rest of us here, have been through similar situations. And, we'll all go through them again. We all know that. We'll all stick together. Bit by bit, we'll educate those that want to be educated about our disease. Then, when such oafs make such rude remarks, our educated friends and co-workers can turn to them and tell them, "Jewels has a disease that manifests itself as severe, intractable headaches. Now, would you like to report yourself to Human Resources for harrassment, or shall I?" Rebecca, The Island Mama |

People who don't get it just stink. Simple as that.

Good for you for taking this to your manager. You go through enough without having co-workers sniping at you.

What a stupid thing for that person to say. Like you don't know how often you're experiencing headaches?! You're the one living with this, for goodness sake. I'm so sorry.

I'm a cynical person, so I tend to roll my eyes at people who say things like that. It doesn't happen often. I guess it would depend on my mood, too.
If you're not in a wheelchair or somesuch then people think you should be functioning on a level close to theirs. It always aggravates me to have people assume I am OK just because I make it in to work. I'm always in some sort of pain or very fatigued, or both, about 99.9% of the time. I have a friend who says I'm always sick, as if she's accusing me of something. OK, well, I'm not making excuses, if that's what they think. She and I have been friends for years, you'd think she'd expend some understanding. But not everyone will. It can be a good teaching tool, however. So, chin up, keep working on letting people know you can't be Supergirl all the time, and why. We can only benefit from spreading the word about migraine, right? I'm sorry you're going through this!
Admittedly, the first thing that entered my mind was that if someone said to me, "You always have a headache," my reply would probably be along the lines of, "Yes, and you're always a pain in the behind." ![]() Teri Robert Lead Expert, MyMigraineConnection terimmc@helpforheadaches.com
