It's been five days, and half of those were recovering from the last one, which lasted about 2 weeks. Mad Im leaving tomorrow for Myrtle Beach with my mom and sister, a long awaited and much needed vacation. I am so sad right now. Maybe it wont be that bad. I took 3 tylenol, 3 ibuprofen, and 3 passionflower. I just want to cry.

OK. I just called the doc and left a message for the nurse to call me back. In addition to the aura and the pressure, the vertigo is also coming and now the hemiplegia. I cant go this alone. And I have to go on my trip I just have to . I need to get away so badly. Why is this happening?

I feel like someone is burning the sides of my head while pushing on my brainstem and spinning me around on an office chair and making my arm fall asleep. Stupid genetics.

Oh Honey, yes you need your time with your Mom and Sister. It sounds wonderful. You've called your doctor, that is a great step.

Please try and stay calm. I don't have the type of migraines you do. So I have no tools to suggest to you until the office gets back to you. I know for myself the more tense I become, the worse my migraine becomes. Does sound negatively effect you? If not can you listen to some music to calm and distact you? What are methods that work for you to help sooth you (sorry for the spelling, I'm bad at it).

Take care of yourself. Keep posting to let us know how your are and to vent if you need to.

Thanks for your support guys.

Its wierd. I actually seem to be over the very worst of it, which is strange for me. Usually the aura and vertigo can go on for days, so maybe this will just be an isolated "migraine." Who knows? I still feel like crum, but was able to just eat a date bar and drink a little water and feel a little pepped up.

The office never did call back. If they do, should I still get a script? Would it do any good at this point? I spose I just ask huh? I have never actually taken anything for migraine before so don't really know the ins and outs of all this yet and don't really know when these things begin or end as my symptoms are very bazaar and can hang out for long periods of time or come and go as they please. Im wondering if they're planning on getting back with me... Its been a few hours now.

I definitely think a headache specialist is going to be the way to go with this thing. I need to have a plan. I had 7 loaves of bread I was supposed to bake today, a house to ready before I left for my trip tomorrow, my son's play therapy appt. tomorrow morning... All of it had to be canceled on a moment's notice. If there was something I could have taken yesterday when I was noticing the blurried vision and nausea... maybe I wouldn't have had to do this. Anyhow, thanks for the kind thoughts

Jamie I am glad you are feeling better. That is a good sign.

I have a question, why do you have no meds to treat an acute attack? Is it due to the type of migraines you get? That was a bit confusing to me.

Again, I'm glad you are feeling better with the symptoms subsiding. Yes, still talk to the office when they call. I don't know if they will prescribe anything without seeing you, but you may need to go in today.

Take care.

Cindy, I was actually just diagnosed about 3 weeks ago with familial hemiplegic migraine and am journaling to see what else is going on... definitely some other migraines with aura, vertigo, blah blah blah. I was diagnosed by my family doc after being turned away by 2 neurologists and an ENT and seeing a psychiatrist for the aftermath! So I just got on Topamax as a preventive and in all my exitement at being diagnosed, common sense eluded me and I didnt think to ask what do I do when it strikes? So here I be. I am scheduled to go back to the doc in August. The office just called to tell me they called in Imitrex, so we shall see. I am feeling quite a bit better already, but I so want to be ship shape for my trip tomorrow! At least I'll have something with me now in case it decides to take up residence.

Jaimee - I hope the Imitrex works for you. If it does, it can be a godsend. You be sure to take it at first sign of migraine, as much as possible. Usually the earlier in the attack you take it, the better it works. But it can take up to 2 hours to work, too. You can also take 2 doses in 24 hours. If you've never had an abortive before, i hope this is a wonderful thing for you. It sure was for me. It helps me about 2/3 of the time. Still that's 2 out of every 3 migraines that are only a few hours long, as opposed to days. makes a huge difference.

Go enjoy that trip! having Imitrex along should make travel much better. and if your house isn't clean... we all know it's nicer to come home to a clean house, but it's better to get away with a dirty one than to stay home & clean!

I'm so glad to hear you go an Rx for the Imitrex. I really hope it works for you. If not, keep in mind there are a lot of other abortive medications out there, so you have options.

Good Luck

Well I got the stupid stuff home and right as I was about to take it I read the prescribing info and it says, do not take if you have hemiplegic or basilar type migraine. So I called the pharmacist and he was not familiar with the terminology, said to call the dr. Called the dr, they were out for lunch. After lunch, he had gone home for the day. I took the daggone stuff back to the pharm for a refund. I mean for pitys sake. I waited all day to hear back from them in the first place. Then this. I paid $40 for 6 pills I may or may not be able to use in time to even notice a difference? Forget it. I went to the health food store and got some petadolex? Who knows. I'm really fed up right now. Im ok. Im just really frustrated. Like when I thought I was going to be diagnosed with MS, I actually was a bit excited, because I thought hey You have A. Treatment is B. Outcome is C. I guess I'm a very black/white type person. I am so looking forward to tomorrow. Maybe this butterbur stuff will really help... Anybody have any luck with it before?

Jaimee,

Group Hug Group Hug Group Hug

I hope you're feeling better this morning and you're on your way to Myrtle Beach for a well deserved vacation.

Did you hear back from your doctor about the Imitrex yet? It would be wonderful if you could take it for your migraines.

You mentioned seeing a migraine specialist, I think that's a great idea because they'll know exactly how to treat your migraines. I began seeing a specialist in January and have seen amazing results Smiler

Let me give you a few more links you may have seen already, but just in case:

Medication Overuse Headache; there is a potential of MOH with over-the-counter medications such as acetaminophen, etc.

Hemiplegic Migraine-The Basics

Enjoy your vacation! I can't wait to hear all about it when you get back. Kick back and relax!!

Thank you Laura for the links. I feel soooo much better today. I am actually quite impressed with the petadolex. I am surprised. I am curious to know what others experience has been with it. With the exception of feeling a little warm after taking it, I had no side effects and felt much clearer, and much less hungover afterward as well. I was even feeling like my face/head was distorted shape/size when my eyes were closed as well, and even that cleared up after taking it, so I was pretty excited by the stuff!

I have enough left in the package for another migraine, so I will take it with me when I leave this afternoon for Myrtle Beach!!! I am so excited! I have lived in SC for over 2 years now and still haven't seen the beach. And have never gone anywhere without my 4 kiddos. Should be a blast!

Thanks for the support guys! LoveYou
