Why Migraines Strike

I was thumbing through my April issue and found this article. (yeah, I'm a big nerd, I subscribe Embarrassed ).

I haven't had a chance to read the full article yet, but I thought some of you would like to check it out too.

Where did they get the figure of 300 million that suffer from migraine?

Teri is always concerned that mainstream medie keep using 28 million instead of the 37 or so million that's accurate, but, 300 MILLION????

This is a really good article, but the number of Migraineurs is a bit off. The total of world-wide Migraineurs should be closer to 800 million!

Teri and I were just talking about the article and she is commenting about the numbers and where the got them as we speak. I'll let you all know what they say.

Thanks for the heads-up. I hope I didn't throw my April issue away already. I'm pretty bad to go through the magazine basket and toss stuff that's more than an month or so old. If we don't have it, I can go to the library and get it there. Haven't been to the big library since DS started driving and could drive his own self there.

And while I'm downtown, I can have lunch with DS. And maybe take him to the Elite. Their enchiladas are the best around! So are their yeast rolls.

Kat thanks so much for sharing this article. It's really great, and something to use to share with those who don't get it! (Even if they did get their prevalence # wrong - the rest of the article is great.) I just linked to it on my blog, and Kat if you're a nerd for having a Sci Am subscription, I'm a total Migraine Geek for making this my vacation reading!!! Big Wink

First of all, by April, I meant August. So Gretchen, you should still have it. Sorry! Embarrassed

Megs: Good idea about sharing with those who don't get it. Especially those who think it is "just a headache" or all in our heads. A reputable publication like Sci Am doesn't tend to run articles on imaginary diseases Wink

I got through about half the article so far. I really liked the explanation of the aura. I have always wondered what's going on up there! Wink

Glad you guys liked it. I'll be sure to check out the "Errata" section of the next issue to see if they correct the 300 million at the beginning.

Thanks for the heads up on the article. It looks really good. I know a few skeptics in my (in-law) extended family will always question my migraine disease. I'm printing this out to read it later and also have on hand to show someone who asks me the ultimate question of HOW I could possibly feel this unwell so often....because when they ask me I'm too unwell to answer?!

p.s. I don't think you're a "nerd" for subscribing to Scientific American. It's a really interesting publication. Thanks again!

LOL ... I probably should have put a warning about reading the article comments.

I thought the SAME thing when I read that moron's comment. I started crafting a response, but I was in too much of a blind rage. Nothing articulate would come out.

Also, I figured most Sci Am readers would just realize he's an idiot. They didn't need me to point it out.

Yeah, I responded to him on my blog once but since then I've learned to just hit "delete!" He says "Migraine has never been scientifically proven in the absence of caffeine withdrawal" Roll Eyes - right, and migraine has never been scientifically tested in the absence of little green men from Mars, either. Or in the absence of cream puffs. I mean, just because you and I think men from Mars and cream puffs have nothing to do with Migraine, since it hasn't been scientifically proven... It's ridiculous!

Caffeine man...trolls...

Can't wait to read this article and see the comments. Blinking

Edit II: thanks for sharing the article. It does explain spreading cortical depression well. Wonder where they got 300 MILLION from? Maybe the one writing had a migraine attack at the time...Alice in Wonderland syndrome...just SEEMED like there were that many... Big Grin

Edit I:
Honestly, not too impressed with the article. They could have gotten all that information from interviewing my migraine speck, and may have. He's told me all this himself, and wow, I guess it was about 8 months ago. I notice they don't cite any sources other than their educational and work credentials.

How lovely it would have been had they been up on their cochlear-dysfunction-in-migraineurs research.

I believe the only thing spreading cortical depression has been firmly associated with is aura symptoms. Link coming up...

The article did a lot of conclusion-drawing and what my dad used to call 'what-if-ing'. I would love to see their sources on the spreading cortical depression, if they have any besides the aura study.

snarksnarksnarksnarksnarksnark... Razzer

basilar-type migraine, MAV, BPPV, migraine with and without aura, cluster headaches, but no tension headaches! W00t! Smiler

Edit III:
Maybe I need to go back to bed. Maybe I need to goto bed. This attack I medicated yesterday hasn't stopped yet.

Please forgive the attitude but love the sufferer... Head Banging
