I know several of you have read or want to read "The Lonely Patient". I just recently finished it. It was difinetly an interesting read. There were parts that really hit home. He was able to describe some of the emotions I have felt over the years dealing with this disease that I haven't been able to put into my words. I think it made me feel validated that what I have felt and continue to feel is a normal and natural process towards acceptance.

Well, my original post was hidden in one of the threads so- I'll repost... I did wind up buying it and reading it. the later parts of the book were more affirming, but the first 40-50 just hit me hard- especially as i was dealing with just finding out about other medical issues at the time--- FROM MY CHART, not the actual MD. (cervical disc issuess-- more there now, but actual pain relief-- thanks to the TENS unit.
This part posted on 6/23 -J, ------------------------ Back several months ago: "i just read 40-50 pages of it at my local B&N. I would have bought it. I planned on it. As I was reading, something hit SO close to home... so raw, so emotionally fitting, so absolutely SCARY to me that I had a panic attack. Keep in mind that this is only the second panic attack I've EVER had- and the other one was also triggered by feeling the same way--scared that I identified with the subject so closely on a very different (WAY off subject) topic. I left the book on the shelf. Left B&N, and ran back towards my car, shaking like a leaf. These patients, all suffering from different pain or disease states... well... they all felt like I did. Anger, the desire to make people understand that it was real, even though it was invisible pain... the loss, the thoughts of recurrance of pain, the... oh my goodness. I'm calmer now. Glad to be home. But I want to buy the book. Maybe I'll get it on amazon.com... Jamie " |
