HOME! I'm home!
I intend to work from home later today. My "vacation" was utterly exhausting... and the drives up to DH's parents' house and back were sheer nightmares. Yesterday, it took us over 13 hours to do a 9 hour trip. Anyhow. Happy Thursday, my friends! Jamie Forum Moderator |

Happy Thursday!
Jamie, sorry to hear that you were caught up in so much traffic. Yikes! Enjoy your time at home. Exciting plans for me include laundry and "organizing" the children's rooms, with their assistance. That is always fun. We often get distracted with the task and end up playing with most of the stuff, but I'm hoping for some headway. Dream big, right? Liz |

Well GM yall!
Jamie, glad ya got home safe and sound! Been a few days since I have been on. Christmas eve at my moms went well, had pain but it was tolerable. The ride there and back was worse uggg nausea despite phenegren! I decided not to go to the extended family get together on Christmas. Its a 2 hour drive, still migraining, depakote making me SO sick feeling, and to top it off my son has a cold with an ear infection(which I came down with Christmas too) So we enjoyed a nice quiet day at home! First time to do that and I SOO enjoyed it! We watched Santa Clause 3 together, put the game table santa brought together, and just played with toys and relaxed alll day! Hope this finds yall well! |

Glad to hear you returned safe Jamie!
Usually trips to NC for me end up taking longer then they should too. I hate traffic! And then to add holiday on top of that! UGH! Glad you are home though! I just asked DH what he had in mind for New Years. He said he wanted to go out because we didn't last year. I was like "oh". I hate going out for New Years. I know I'm a crank. I'd rather cook, stay home, play video games, watch movies, now I can play my new guitar!! and watch the ball drop. Plus I am exausted after all this holiday stuff! I'm thinking I'll make a nice steak of some sort (I was going to do filet till I got a notice saying we are short in escrow! Let me tell you this first year of being a home owner....lots of little surprises we were not prepared for! I really can't wait to get out of this exspensive state!!!! Ok enough of that griping! I hope everyone enjoys their day! Well, I made it home to WA safely
My Christmas was wonderful. I flew home to MA to see my mom, sister and BIL, and the assorted animals in their two-family home. Christmas morning consisted of potato latkes made by my BIL. (He and my sister are Jewish, so our Christmas/holiday celebrations are a weird hybrid, but we do our gift exchange at Christmas.) We hung out in the living room around the tree and unwrapped presents. We all spent the day in our pjs, alternately cooking and working on a jigsaw puzzle while watching movies on my mom's new plasma tv. I flew back to WA last night, which was a long flight as usual. I got home safely, so I can't complain too much! Unfortunately the beastie was not kept at bay as much as I would have liked, despite the Frova. I woke up with a migraine this morning (not too bad, a 4), which I'm hoping will calm down soon. I'm at my abortive max for the week, so no more for me. My DBF flew in from VA last night, too, so we met at the airport and drove home. Our poor kitten was frantic when we got home. We had a coworker stop in on Monday to check on him, but he had finished his food and most of his water. Plus he was lonely! He should recover over the next few days. DBF came home with a cold, so I gave him some vitamin C to take. Hopefully he feels better soon, too. Jamie, glad to hear you made it home safely - I've done the drive through NJ/DE/MD/VA way too many times. Why is it that Delaware is such a small state but always has such terrible traffic? Momsbreak, glad to hear that you had a relaxing Christmas. It's nice to have a (mostly) stress-free holiday. And Eileen, I hate going out for New Year's too. Fortunately I don't think DBF and I will do much of anything other than curl up on the couch and watch some movies. Hope everyone is having a good head day! -MJ my blog: http://rhymeswithmigraine.blogspot.com/ Why do I capitalize Migraine? MJ- You're a much better person than I am- I wasn't able to get up and go to work, so I brought work to me. I did some work earlier, and then BAM migraine. Kinda knew it was gonna happen with the messed up sleep schedule that came with yesterday's travel.
As for your question- how does Delaware have so much traffic? It's called toll roads. They certainly make bad situations stack up-- even for those with EZ Pass. But, there's a road that parallels the 95 corridor from a little past the Blue Hen welcome center/happy food place (Welcome center with gobs of food- and stores and (thank you, thank you, thank you- bathrooms!) We got off at the next exit and went around the DE/MD traffic almost down to Baltimore! Eileen- I'm also a New Year's Eve homebody. I hate dealing with all of the drunk people on the roads. Also, I'd rather not go to a party where all are toasting to a "happy new year" or a "another healthy year" That gets me a wee bit (meh) Bah Humbug. I'd like it to be a great new year, but one that I don't overhope for miracles. I guess it's from my p's. They keep saying "THIS" will be the year... So, I guess I've internalized some of that, despite the fact that I'm living with chronic pain- not acute pain (neck, anyway)- they say "this is the year" I suppose I'm rambling. I get this way while migraines are breaking up... Everyone-Thanks for all of the "welcome home's" They're very much appreciated. It's nice to at least have a migraine in my own bed Jamie Forum Moderator |

Well, I may have come into work, but I can't say I've been terribly productive today.
And I really wish I had known about that road next to 95!! When I was going to school in VA and my family was in NJ, I suffered through that stretch of 95 too many times. And I had EZPass! Oh well. Now I know, if I ever end up doing that drive again. -MJ my blog: http://rhymeswithmigraine.blogspot.com/ Why do I capitalize Migraine? Glad you're home, safe and sound.
I like a nice quiet New Year's at home, too. We used to get together with some family friends on New Year's Eve and go to dinner someplace nice, and then go to one house or the other and play board games together until the ball dropped. That was always nice, because there weren't a lot of people, but there's something to be said for being home where you can just go to sleep early if you get too tired before midnight. Welcome home Jamie! Glad to know you kinda had a day off from work and your head is getting better too.
I hear you guys on staying home for New Year's Eve. I always watch the ball drop in Times Square (via the TV of course) even if it means setting the alarm clock. Kind of a tradition from growing up. Grandma would wake us if we were sleeping - normally we were too pumped up on soda - anyway, she would stuff dollar bills in our hand to make sure we would ring in the New Year with cash in our palms so it would bring us fortune for the upcoming year. Not sure where she got that tradition from (Greek?) but it hasn't brought me fortune yet but I still insist that everyone in my house, sleeping or not has money in their grasp LOL. Poor kids probably think I am a nutjob!! Hmmmmm, if you guys have any tips on the trip from VA to NY, they would be greatly appreciated. It seems like no matter which way we have taken, Route 13 or I-95 we still get hit with the traffic. Of course, the Jersey Turnpike and GWB are no favs of mine anyway. My day was very productive. I ran errands with the kids and am getting ready to decide, left over dinner or speghetti? I think leftovers are in order...again! Take care everyone!! Laura, you could always try going up the Delmarva peninsula and taking the Cape May-Lewes ferry into NJ, then going straight up the Garden State Parkway to the NJ Turnpike into NY. Not sure if it's any better, but it's different than 95...

I admire all you who brave the traffic. One of the advantages of living in a podunk place like Mississippi is that rush hour is actually about 30 minutes. The Interstates around town are crowded, but things thin out as you get out of town.
We're going to Columbus, MS, about 3 hours away, tomorrow. DH has a lunch set up with aunts and uncles and cousins on Saturday. We haven't seen them in a year. They're scattered in a 1-hour radius from Columbus, and DH's brother lives there. We'll spend Friday and Saturday night and come home Sunday. We stay at a Wingate Inn, which we like. Not a lot going on in Columbus, despite a big Air Force base, but enough decent places to eat. DH and DS are at the Honda place. The plan is to come home with a Civic for DS. He's been driving my old 1994 Saturn. We've been trying to replace it for a couple of years, but DS resisted. The mechanic warned that it had several terminal diseases, so DS took my car back to college at Thanksgiving, and I've been driving the Saturn. Better for it to break down on me, here, than on him in the middle of finals. It did break down 2 weeks ago. I'm driving a rental. The Saturn will go to the Kidney Foundation after the first of the year. It's cold here -- for us. I've got leftover ham and turkey from my mom's on Christmas Eve, plus leftover roast from Christmas night, but I want SOUP! I hope tomorrow is great for everybody. Gretchen in Mississippi |

Relatively mild migraine today, triggered by the icky weather, I think.
I got a lot done at work. New Year's Eve is kind of strange for me. Please hang on to your hat while I explain, it sounds a little dramatic--I guess it actually is. On 12/29/93, a close friend of mine, 56 years old, came down with a severe stomach flu that was going around that year. The following afternoon I went by with some meds--immodium and compazine--that a doctor had ordered for her. I didn't see her because she was afraid of giving someone the illness; I left the meds in the door and rang the bell. I called her when I got home, and she had brought the meds inside. "I expect I'll talk to you tomorrow," she said, and I responded, "I expect so." But the next morning, 12/31/93, I could not reach her by phone. Nor in the afternoon. I called her daughter and left a message, to which the daughter responded at about 5 P.M. She asked me to meet her at the house in 20 minutes. When I arrived, the daughter was on the front steps freaking out. She said she had been inside, and she was sure her mother was dead. She had called 911. We were already hearing sirens. Her mother was, indeed, dead. It was about 2 hours before the medical examiner released the body and the funeral home picked her up. Whatever New Year's Eve meant to me before this event, it will never mean again. I have certain activities I have done on New Year's Eve almost every year since then, even though by now, I'm pretty much pain free that evening. A certain friend has accompanied me through the evening nearly every year since 1995, but she will be out of town on New Year's Eve this year. So I plan to spend the evening at home alone for only the second time since 1993. My plans for the evening always include going to bed early--I've never liked staying up til midnight for any reason. Although for some reason, I was still awake at midnight on New Year's Eve in 1993, even though I was in bed. . . Finding a friend's body is both painful and a privilege. Not for anything in this world would I have wanted her daughter to go through that experience alone. Thanks for letting me share that part of my life. |

Hi all, checking in after a very long day.
Hubby went for a physical to join a Hazardous Material Response group - it's required - and the Dr. found a heart problem, AF. So after sending him, post haste, to a cardio, with EKG in hand, he had a stress test and is now on rat poison (coumadin), dixogin, and diltiazem. This is devastating to him as he has NEVER had to take meds before, although he has supported me wholeheartedly. This wonderful man donates platelets every 2-3 weeks and is at 53 gallons, I think he might be needing watched to ensure that he doesn't become depressed.... He is scheduled for a 'cardioversion' on January 02 - this is where they will put him under and try to re-sync his heart to get it back in the correct timing. The same stuff that we do when we go out on an EMT call for a cardiac patient. Keep him in ya'lls prayers please. Gilda Did you know that the elephant is the only mammal that cannot jump? |
