Howdy, everyone!

If you have a minute, please send up a prayer for my son and my family! It seems a silly thing, but we are DEFINITELY having the first day of school blues! I didn't think my son was going to get on the bus this AM! Yesterday he informed me that he was absolutely NOT going to school and he was planning to lock himself in his room! Today, he complained a bit before we left home, but held it together long enough to climb on board the bus! (I was VERY relieved to see it pull away with him actually on it!!)

He's a very smart little boy and boredom is a BIG problem with school!! He also gets really nervous when big changes come about. I REALLY hope he will come home this afternoon and say he had a terrific day! If not, I'm not sure I'll be able to get him on the bus tomorrow!!

I never liked the first day of school either...I don't blame him!! Razzer

Thanks guys!

I hope he had a good day. What grade is he going into?

It's hard to believe your son is just starting school today - my kids have been in school since August 14!

Jenny,

I hope your son made out well today (and you too!) and that he can't wait to go back tomorrow.

Hi guys!

Thanks for all of the happy thoughts!

We all survived the day! My son is in first grade now. In our district, Kindergarten was just 1/2 day, so this was his first full day away!

My son said it was "Boring," but he was excited to tell me all about his desk, books, supplies, etc. He was also thrilled that he had TWO recesses and it was gym day, too!!

I think he'll go back tomorrow without much trouble!! Smiler

They do love gym day, that's for sure. Smiler

I'm glad that even though it was "boring", he had a smooth day, with some exciting bits throughout.

And recess, good grief, it's Nikoli's favorite "subject."

I'd forgotten about having TWO recesses. One in the morning, and one during the end of lunch period. The faster you ate, the faster you could get outside.

First grade is a big step. My son was thrilled to be in a grade that had a number and was a real "grade." Kindergarten didn't count as a "grade" because it didn't have "grade" in its name.

I'm sure school will get less boring by the end of the week. The first couple of days are always tough, handing out textbooks, trying to learn everyone's name, trying to get used to the teacher.

It sounds like a great day!

The schools around here have been in session since August 8. My son started college classes on August 22.

Back in the olden days, school started the day after Labor Day.

Thanks again for al of the terrific replies!

Well, day two went well also. I think we'll definitely be fine from here on out!

Our district started later this year than ever before. There are several MAJOR renovations going on in different school buildings here, so I think they decided to start later to give that stuff more time.

Yep-the two recess thing is a BIG hit! His best buddy is in a different first grade class, so my son is thrilled that they are able to be together during lunch and both recesses. (You're right, guys--recess is definitely his favorite subject now!)

BTW, he didn't say a word about today being boring!! That's terrific!!

It was an adjustment for me today, too. My other son went to his first day of preschool this afternoon. So I actually had some quiet time without the boys!! I NEVER go anywhere without them (except to see the doc or hospital), so it was nice to just be at home in the quiet. But I'll have to be honest: I was VERY happy when they came back home!! Big Grin Smiler Big Grin

Gretchen, I can't even imagine sending one to college!! That'll be a really rough time for me!! I keep telling myself it's a long way off, but I'm sure it'll come sooner than I imagine!!

Thumbs Up

School started here today also. Our high school senior did just fine, but our 7th grader looks a little shell shocked!

How did he like his first day of preschool? Is this the first "school" for him? I hope everything was great!

Hi, Nancy and Jamie!

Nancy--Oh geez, 7th grade! That's a tough time! I still have nightmares that I can't open my locker! I also sometimes dream that I go to school in my PJ's and that I've skipped so much class that I don't know where to go or what to take with me!! Hair Raising Hmmm...I wonder what those dreams say about me????

And you've got a high school senior, too? My neighbor is in her last year of high school. She sent me a text message on the first day of school saying "I can't wait to get out of this town!" I think they really start looking forward to college and being on their own at that age! (But I was the opposite--I was very happy with being at home!!)

Jamie--My son went to preschool last year, too. But he was only 3 and the class was only 2 days a week for 2 hours each time. This year, he's got a different teacher and he goes 3x/week. He LOVES LOVES LOVES it!!! He's extremely laid back!! Basically, he seems able to find happiness no matter what he is doing! He loves making crafts, he knows how to read, and he knows all the math facts my first grader is bringing home for homework!!

It's funny, but my two kids are like COMPLETE opposites! My older one is VERY particular, more high strung, and more confrontational. He's also very bright and likes to show that a lot! My younger one is very social, laughs easily and often, and just sort of goes with the flow! He knows his stuff, too--he just sits back quietly and soaks everything in. Then you find out later just how much he learned!!

Anyway, thanks for the responses guys!
