Hi everyone!

I'm sure this is a question for my doctor, but I'm not feeling like it's an emergency right now. I've had a nasty migraine today, so I took a 100mg tab of Imitrex. It's about 3 hours later and my throat feels tight. I'm not having trouble breathing or anything...IMO that WOULD be a BIG emergency!!! But I am having trouble swallowing. It almost feels like I have pulled muscles in my throat (kind of a weird feeling).

The funny thing is that I've taken Imitrex MANY times in the past and never felt this kind of effect...

The good news is that my migraine has abated some.

Just wondering if anyone else has had this happen?

I haven't tried Imitrex, so I can't help you there. Perhaps you could call your pharmacist? They usually have a lot of information about side effects.

If your pharmacy isn't open, try calling one that's open 24 hours.

Hope this helps!

But have you taken the pill form before (I don't remember?)

I'd start with the pharmacist, also, then the doctor.

I have this exact problem with Imitrex and all the triptans. My throat gets tight and so does my chest. it's hard to swallow and hard to take a deep breath. You can try taking Benydryl when you take the Imitrex, it might help and it might not. For me i am apparently now allergic to triptans due to how bbad my reaction is.

I was on Imitrex shots, which were awesome, but also had quite a few side effects such as a tightness in the chest, closed throat, heart fluttering, pain in the jaw and muscle pain... usually these did not bother me much since they would affect me right after taking the shot and only last about twenty minutes. Unfortunately the adverse effects got quite bit worse with continued and frequent use and I had to go off them when I got angina. So important to keep track of and mention to your doctor.

Yes, this happens to me with Imitrex STATdose (I don't use the tabs). It also happened on Amerge, and I ended up in the ER because the cluster of symptoms were so frighteningly similar to a heart attack.

Throat tightness seems to depend on when I take the Imitrex. If I don't catch the migraine in time and administer my shot too late, I tend to get a lot more side effects and throat tightness is one of them. The worse my timing is, the worse the throat tightness seems to be as well.

There are days when I do things perfectly, though, and this still happens. It seems that about every 1 in 10 shots actually make my migraines a lot worse for no apparent reason. It's a mystery to me, but for the 9 in 10 times that it does work or at least takes the edge off, I'm willing to put up with it.

I find this happens to me with Imitrex and Zomig - the only tripan so far that has not done this for me is Frova.

I find drinking tea helps me.

The only concern I would have is that it seemed to hit you so long after taking it....but then again everyone is different.

That's one of the reasons why I stopped taking Imitrex. It caused me such tightness and pain in my neck and throat that it frightened me. It got worse and worse with each dose I took. Didn't help the migraine attack either after the first four or five doses.

I had a bad reaction to it too. Won't take it again, nope.

Supposedly, my migraine spec 'invented' Imitrex. Teri respectfully disagrees! Skillet
