We could see generic sumatriptan (Imitrex) injections any time now. The earliest we'd see generic tablets is probably about 2010. The link Droolie gave you is a good reference for the patent dates on all the triptans.

Thanks for that link Dragon. It was very helpful and informative. I wish there was a generic available in the Triptans because it is so expensive. Luckily, I currently have insurance, which is very expensive, however, many people can't afford these medicines as well as others and it is a huge concern.
Thanks again. Nancy W |

I'd welcome the generic. Our insurance is starting to place restrictions on migraine medication, meaning the individual bears more of the cost. Migraine meds are expensive & they seem to have singled out Imitrex.

Oh this is interesting. I'm in Canada and I've been buying generic Imitrex for the past year or so. It's dramatically cheaper. It's in tablet format only. I didn't realize the patents were different in the US and Canada.

Hi Marie,
Welcome to MyMigraineConnection. Do you find relief from Imitrex? I'm glad that it's cheaper for you in CA. There seem to be lots of differences between the US and CA don't there? We look forward to hearing more from you. |

Thanks for the reminder info about when Imitrex will be going generic.
I imagine the oldest products go generic first, so I'm sad to see that the Imitrex injection StatDose will be the first to go generic. It's the only Imitrex and only triptan I've taken that each and every time I've taken it made me feel like I was having a heart attack. My heart is fine, so they told me it was okay to take, but it felt MUCH too unpleasant and believe, I wanted the results STAT and still couldn't bear it..also the only drug I had to "pray myself through" for the duration of the side effects (about 30 minutes, which seemed like an eternity). Tried it 3-4 times and even my doctor said it was better to take the triptan nasal spray or another triptan. I hope there's a better solution by the later dates...long time to wait for generics Thanks again for the info. |

Big Sigh! My least fav of all is Imitrex, rotten side effects and poor injectors (at least for me in while in pain). Makes my hair tingle!!
But, 2010 isn't that far away right? We have waited so long for some preventatives to be found, why not abortives too! Laura Forum Moderator ***You're welcome to enter your birthday, etc in the Celebrate folder so we can party with you!! =) *** |

Well, it's taken me 3 months to respond but here I am.
I find Imitrex invaluable. As people have said before, it allows me to function normally at work. I love being able to rely on it - know that I can take 1 and leave the house and I'll be OK within 30-60 mins. When I think back to all of those days of staying holed up with the curtains draw, no sound, etc. I recently started trying the nasal version but find it less reliable for me. It I take 2 doses right away, it sometimes works but not always. And I really have no quibble with the tablets - just wanted to see if the nasal worked faster. |
