Hello all. I am pregnant with my 3rd child. I can remember having fairly bad headaches as a child occasionaly, but never really had migraines untill I was pregnant with my last child who is 1 years old now.I only had 2 during that pregnancy, and my midwife was the one who suggested it was a migraine. They never went away after that and now I'm 31 wks preggo with my 3rd and dying. I have been having frequent migraines. She has given me a prescription for tylenol 3 (does nothing but make me sick) and hydrocodone's 5/500. I have a headache almost everysingle day. On bad days, I throw up, the pressure behind my eye is relieved for about 15 minutes, and then I get sick again. It builds up over and over again. My midwife gives me shots of nubain and phenergan, or vistaril. This usually works or at least helps so that I can keep something down. Friday I got another whopper. It came on Thursday in the middle of the night. Friday, she gave me an injection of Nubain and vistaril. I'm not sure if it was too soon or what, but it hasn't gone away and it is Monday now. I felt better at first, slept all day, woke up Saturday and couldn't sleep or get rid of the pain. I called her back, said to go to the ER. I went and they said all they could give me was some reglan and that was it. So, I left frusterated, still in pain, and feeling like a criminal. Yesterday midwife said to take some phenergan and hydros. I am still feeling a horrible headache. I am praying that it is going away somewhat as the intensity is a LITTLE less today. I have two young children and this is very hard to deal with. I see a neuro on thursday, but what do I do untill then? Anyone dealt with this while pregnant?
First, ask for a consultation with a neurologist, if you don't already have a neuro. Second, there is nothing wrong with asking for meds. When pregnant, our choices are incredibly limited for migraine treatment and prevention. My plan (when I finally get pregnant, made with my OB/Gyn will be to go to the hospital and be treated with narcotics and magnesium sulfate. I'm sorry you're going through all this, it's not fair.
I also remembered to add that you shouldn't take the Lortab or the Tylenol 3 more than 3 days because of the risk of medication overuse headaches.
I'll be thinking of you, Wishing-to-be-pregnant-migraneur
I'll second what Mel said and add that while there aren't many preventive meds you can take daily while pregnant, there are a few. Have your midwife consult with the neuro, and make sure the neuro is a headache specialist.
Good luck.

Yes, I didn't take any hydro's yesterday to see and I had a TERRIBLE rebound headache. My neck hurt. Everything hurt. During last weekend's 4 day migraine however, going to the hospital didn't help. The doctor said " I can give you some Reglan, but that's it. That is the only thing that is safe for your baby." I said "That's it?" He said, "What is it you want me to do? You seem very upset that you're getting REglan and that's all." I don't see how I could seem upset when my eyes are closed and I'm mumbling from the pain. No fun to be preggo with migraines. I almost feel like I would like to just be admitted to the hospital for the rest of my pregnancy bc of the migraine pain and sickness.
That doctor, quite frankly, is full of crap. Every labor and delivery unit in this country gives narcotics of some sort to their patients; Demerol, Stadol, Morphine, Fentanyl, Nubain. Every one of them also gives magnesium sulfate at some point. Granted, they aren't using these drugs for migraines usually, but these drugs can be used for migraines. I really think you need to get a neurologist involved in your care.
Well, I went to the neuro. He did all of the cooridnation tests and poked on my back, shoulders etc. He found 2 very sore places on my shoulders and neck. He suggested some excercises and to follow up with him in 6 weeks. Hopefully, he is right and it will help, but I hate to have the feeling that he wasn't taking me too seriously. I ried to explain that I spend days lockied in my bedroom, vomiting over and over again, etc. But we'll see. What sucks though is that he said since I am pregnant there is NOTHING he can ive me other than tylenol. I know this isn't correct, bc my midwife already prescribed me to pain meds. He was an older man, maybee he is just not up to date on pregnancy stuff. When I went in, I had had a headache for about four days, I told him this, and he said all I could do was take tylenol and deal with it. It was pretty frusterating, but at least I'm hoping these excercises help.
I've had my own share of suffering with migraines through all four of my pregnancies too. And I was told by a neuro, even while trying to conceive, that there was NOTHING that I could safely take as a preventative while pregnant. So I just basically waited until I was done having kids & nursing until I started treating! Not fun at all. Plus having other little ones underfoot while you're sick just makes it that much worse...sorry.
Anyway, just wanted you to know that I sympathize!
It's good to know that I am not the only one who has been told no preventatives when preggo. I just felt like the neuro wasn't taking me seriously, like oh it's a headache. Hydrocodones 5/500 barley dull the pain when a bad one hits, not that I can even take anythign half the time because I'm vomiting. My midwife said no more nubain shot, I need to deal untill baby is born. I guess I'll be holed up in my room for the next 7 weeks.
i'm pulling for you, PreggoMama. i hope you can find some relief!
in the meantime, is there anyone you could ask to help out with your children? friends, family, church members? i sure hope so -- if you're anywhere near SLC, utah, let me know. i'll be there to give you a break. emily

Ahh, finally a good ER visit, someone cares. I went in today and they took me straight to the maternity unit, monitored the baby for about an hour, during which i was suffering with my migraine, but I remained patient. They turned off all of the lights, gave me a wet towel to put on my facce and were very quiet and compasionate. When they deemed the baby was doing well, they sent me back down to the ER. I was quickly given phenergan and Diludid. Then they did a CAT scan, brought me back gave me more diludid. Then let me rest in the dark. Came back gave me more diludid and some Zofran (which has THE worst side effects on me). I should have said something about the Zofran, however, I am now 100% sure that I shouldn't take this med ever, so it was worth it. Anyways, they sent me home with prescriptions for pain meds, and instructions to come back if it worsened or new symptoms appeared. BTW on the cat scan, they found I had a bad sinus infeciton. Anyways, it's very nice to feel like someone cares and I'm not crazy. I am feeling a lot better other than the panic or nervousness that the Zofran caused. The Diludid helped a LOT though. Anyne have any info on it?
Diludid us a narcotic pain reliever. It is a pregnancy category C drug. Please be careful, I know you are in pain, but make sure all the docs, OB, neuro, are on board and do not give you meds that may create a problem for you or the baby.
Yeah, I'm 32 weeks so it's impossible not to know that I'm pregnant. I seriously doubt that in this day and age theyw ould give me somehthing that could be a libility. Plus they were only giving like half a cc at a time untill they found what worked.
