I'm not new to migraines, but new to this forum. I used to be on the about.com migraine forum. When this one started I bookmarked it and finally got over here tonight.

For me, the hardest thing is working 40 hours. If I can work 5 days a week for two weeks, it's a miracle. It happens a couple times a year. Thank goodness for FMLA.

I also have problems with weakness in my arms and legs that no one has been able to diagnose. Guess that is just part of my complicated migraine picture.

Glad I found this new site, it very interesting.

Jan! Welcome, sweetie. I'm so glad to see you.

Haven't we talked about this "weakness" before? Nancy and I just got back from the American Headache Society conference. There was a session there that confirmed what we've been told before -- if there's true motor weakness, that can be only one kind of Migraine, hemiplegic Migraine. I'm sorry you're still having these problems. Any chance of another doctor who will pay attention to the weakness and take a good look at hemiplegic Migraine?

Welcome again!

Hi Jan
Glad you found us. We are very happy here.

Does your weakness in your arms in legs go along with your Migraine attacks or is it independent of them? As Teri said, true motor weakness goes hand in hand with Hemiplegic Migraine. But if you motor weakness does not go with your Migraine attacks, then this also needs to be assesed by your docs...

Hang in there, we are here to help.

Yes, Teri -- it's me, Jan who doesn't have a clue what's going on.

The weakness problems are worst when I have a migraine. But I do not have to have a migraine to have the weakness problems.

Doctors keep telling me my MRI does not show a stroke, yet they mention a white area that puzzles them. Why do I think I had a small stroke? One, because my life changed 12/29/02.

Second, because the last neurologist I saw asked me to hop on my right leg - hop, hop, hop. Then my left leg -- thud...try to balance...thud...try to balance...thud. It's better in person, but I think you get the idea. My left side is funky from the eyelids to feet.

I also have chiari malformation (I have so many brains some are stretching into my spinal column area). Again, doctors tell me my symptoms are not from this problem.

If it is more than complicated migraine symptoms, I'd just like to know what is wrong with me. If it had a name, there might be ways to fix me.

It seems like such a simple request!

Jan,

I'm remembering more of your history as I read this post. I can't believe that your doctor hasn't found out any more after all this time What are your options with getting to another doc?

Teri - I have seen every neurologist at the big health clinic. My insurance also covered a neuro clinic and I saw the head guy. He finally took 14 vials of blood from me and said it ruled out anything autoimmune or cardiac related. He did not think the chiari was causing my troubles. He was puzzled by the spot on my MRI. He understood my frustration but could not help me.

I don't have a neurologist right now. I tried to get an appt at the Mayo Clinic - it's an hour from home and in my insurance. I guess I didn't make myself sound sick enough. They turned me down.

My primary doctor is now working in another part of the clinic. In order to get my monthly FMLA paperwork signed, I'm now seeing the same primary as my husband. He did say he would review my records and call me if he had any new ideas. He was surprised that I never had a psychoneuro test when I had my maybe-stroke.

The last neurologist asked if that had been my worst headache ever. I said I couldn't remember much after leaving the checkout stand at Target. To which he replied, do you often black out with migraines? I don't know what difference it would make if someone told me I'd had a stroke. I just think I would have some peace with understanding how my life changed overnight.

Still, the worst of it all is the migraines. That's why I'm here.

Jan,

I know first-hand the difficulties of traveling to see a specialist, but maybe it's time for you to consider that?

Anyway, I hate it that you're having such horrid problems, but glad you're here with us.

Hi Jan, welcome back.

I am on a similar path as you. My MRI shows that I've had 2 strokes and as a result, I have alot of pain with the right side of my head/face/neck.

I'm not finding a doctor that knows everything about all of issues (migraine w/ stroke history, and blood clotting disorder) so I feel like I'm the quarterback for several doctors (neurologist, pain management, hemotologist). I would like to find a single doctor or clinic that could manage my case but I have not found anything as of yet.

I hope you're having a good day.
Hugs,
Kelly
