Good point about Tylenol and rebound. My Neurologist warned me against those meds. when he told me to read the book. Besides, I never take it anyway because of its effects on the liver (I'm on depakote). I also found out the hard way that ibruprophen and benadryl cause rebound. The book has been very helpful for me in terms of diet. I had never realized before reading it that citrus, yogurt, and onions were triggers--as well as lots of other "healthy" foods that I love.

Phyllis,

IMO, the section on food triggers is the best part of the book. Where he and I disagree, however, is that he feels we should eliminate all trigger foods permanently. I, on the other hand, feel that we should do an elimination diet, where you cut them all out, then add them back in one at a time to see if they ARE triggers. Why deprive ourselves of some very healthy foods if they're not triggers?

If you're interested, we have an article on food triggers, complete with a free, downloadable workbook -- Managing Migraine – Migraine Trigger Foods

I think of that book as a "buffet" book. Take the good parts, and leave the rest. Wink An interesting side note -- Buchholz and I have the same literary agent. The first thing I saw when I walked into her office was a copy of that book.

I have been on Topamax for a little over a year and I've lost 57 pounds! I still get hungry, but once I start eating, I just seem to get full really fast. I also don't snack between meals anymore. Oh, I have also noticed that my body seems to think that any fluid that I put into it, water, diet soda is the same as a meal. I won't go off Topamax because it has been a miracle as far as the migraines are concerned! I'll put up with the forgetfulness and the tingling, I would rather have that then the horrible headaches!

hi, I have been on Topomax since Christmas and my headaches are better but not gone.I'v lost 8 lbs, which is a big deal in a bad way because I only weighed 98 to start with. Am just not hungry.I got scared when I got to 9o lbs, made myself eat but still no wt gain.
Does anyone have the terrible, OVERWHELMING fatigue/sleepliness? I was ok at 1st, now horrible sleepliness, like I am drugged, yawning constantly, MUST sleep fir 2-4 hrs. Starts at 2-3pm. Awful. Anyone else have this?

Hello and welcome!

Hmmmmmmmmm. Have you been at the same dosage level since Christmas? If not, how long have you been at the level you're at now? Do you take it all in one daily dose or split into two doses? Sorry to ask so many questions. Just trying to get a better sense of what's happening. If you've been at the same dosage for three months or more, and the sleepiness isn't letting up, please talk to your doctor. At some point, we all have to decide if a medication is the right one for us. None of them is the right one for all of us, but there are lots of choices to try.

welcome again!

I have been on topamax for a year now. I lost 19lbs the first three months and stabilized for 9. then just recently I all of a sudden lost another 20 pounds. I definitely can't afford to lose any more weight. I am now 5'8 113 lbs. My migraines are under control for the most part but I have noticed other side effects from the drug and am wondering if anyone else has. I have noticed some personality changes I am more angry and short tempered. I have less patience and little things bug me. I hate this about myself I never used to be this way. Anyone else experinece this? Any help would be nice. I hate to get off the drug because I have been on so many and finally have migraine control, but I hate the personality change, my mother experienced this too.

Hi,
Yes, I always need a nap around 2pm, but it was only recently. I think it has been the drastic weight loss that has made me more tired. I never felt fatigued the first 9 months. I have lost 40lbs so far. Keep an eye on the weight loss.

Hi Joyce,

I just had to respond because I found it funny that my mom's name is Joyce too and she was on topamax also and she didn't lose any weight either. I thought it was her posting until I looked at the bottom and saw it said it was your 30th birthday. She is much older. Anyway Happy belated.

Hi,

I have been on 150mg a day for a year now. It is working great for me. I have lost 40lbs, I experience short term memory loss and still have some tingling in my extremities every now and again but it is tolerable. My biggest complaint is my personality change. I have a short temper and am angrier than usually. I don't like myself this way and I try to control it but I finally have migraine control for the first time in years. I had a migraine induced stroke 2 years ago and will take whatever I have to to prevent another one from happening. Hopefully you will get the relief you need a this dose. It has worked for me. Good luck.

Hi, I'm new here. I just started getting migraines every day about 2 months ago. After consulting with a neurologist, the official diagnosis was "transformed migraines", which I believe is a fancy term for "get them everyday." I also get the "ice pick being stabbed through my right eye deal. Ive been started on Topamax, and have been tapering up. I'm currently on week 2, taking 1 25mg in the am, and 2 25mg in the pm. 2 weeks from now it will be 3 in the morning, and 3 at night, totalling 150mg. I think I stay at that dose for a month, then see the neurologist again. My question is, does anyone typically get relief at that doseage, or does it typically need to go higher? As of right now, I'm "enjoying " every side effect listed for this weird medication, but am still having the migraines daily, and still having to work, (and I have a job at a computer, which is awful at this point-given the medical conditon, and medication side effects...cant concentrate, poor memory, numb hands...)

When have other people started really getting relief with their topamax doses? I'm willing to live with these seemingly never ending side effects if the migraines will disappear, but so far nothing. If I'm still not experience relief at 150mg, why stay at that same doseage for a month? Why not ask the neurologist to try upping it a little? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated...and sorry to ramble on. No one here understands. After all, they're just "headaches!"

Has anyone experienced mouth sores with Topamax. I am having these and thought to look up side effects. There they were. I'm using a pain deadener for dentures and it works pretty well, but I definitely don't like this side effect. Any ideas?

Hi Folks, glad to have found you. Wink

I was first prescribed Topamax about six months ago by a neurologist. I've been having terrible migraines. (Somewhat new onset.) My Primary MD and an ENT ruled out sinus and other issues and I tried a variety of headache preventatives and holistic treatments before the Topamax.

Well, after reading some horror stories about Topamax, I admit I chickened out after the first two weeks on it. I found myself to be exhausted and weepy while taking it. But the headaches drove me back to try it again. And this time it really seems to be working WELL. I'm just amazed! To get through the day without pain is such a gift.

And weight loss for me is a benefit. About 10 lbs in the past 2 weeks, 18 lbs overall. I'm just not hungry. But I am eating "enough" and I find I am eating healthier foods like salad and whole grains. As others have mentioned, I become full very quickly, and don't really become all that hungry between meals.

I'm at a healthy weight/BMI now. I'm sure I'll be able to maintain this. I'll be keeping an eye on the side effects. I know there are some serious ones to watch out for. But for now, the benefits seem to really outweigh the risks.

Himbkb12. Welcome to MyMigraineConnection. We are so glad you found us.

Yes, topamax is a powerful medication but one one many people have great success with. Something to keep in mind is that if this one doesn't work for you there are over 100 medications used to treat Migraine disease. Click here

Another word about side effects, they are potential, meaning that they don't happen to everyone all the time. If they did then the FDA would have a hard time approving new drugs!

Again, welcome and we hope to hear more from you.

pearl,

I have been extremely tired for the past few days on topamax, but I also increased my dose about a week ago. I took a nap Friday aft (took the aft off from work) and yesterday aft and probably will today, Sunday. I am hoping/praying it's a temporary side effect. If not, I'll be going off this stuff.

Also, it's really reduced my appetite over the past month. It wouldn't surprise me if I'm undernourished, which could obviously contribute to being fatigued.

Also, I don't know how tall you are, and I don't pretend to be a doctor, but 90 lbs seems awfully low for any female teenager and above. Have you considered talking to your doc about that? Take care,
Beth Smiler
