Welcome to MyMgiraineConnection. Migraine and pregnancy is a tough issue. Some women experience fewer Migraine attacks while pregnant, some little or no change, while others have more Migraine attacks.

Taking medication while pregnant is a topic that needs to be discussed in depth with your doctors. There are many drugs that are and are not suitable to take during pregnancy. Only a doctor can help you with this.

We understand how tough this is, Migraine disease is difficult during the best of times. Please let us know how we can help you further. And we hope to hear more from you.

I've been on topamax for over a year and haven't
noticed any weight lost. And I wish I was loosing weight. I didn't start loosing weight until I was put on a low-fat diet and started exercising on a regular basis. But for me Topamax is helping me with my migraines to not have them to many.

Just joined..wanted to see if anyone really gets relief on 25 mg of Topamax. I took it 2 years ago at 100 mg per day and had to get off. I have stomach probs already and the side effects of the weight loss and upset stomach were too much for me. didnt weigh that much to begin with and lost 25 lbs, had kidney stones, had every side effect Topamax had, but the headaches were gone- even at my period! I have tried everything else- am 34 and have had them since 6 or 7- so I am back on it remembering I didn't have problems when I took it at 25mg or even 50 mg but I just started back and am wondering if anyone out here has had success on such a low dosage. I can already see about 3 lbs lost after 1 week. I take it at night and get very sleepy. We will see!

For over 20 years have been suffering for devastating headaches. Thought they were sinus infection. Ended up in ER more than once for these things. The last time an ER doctor thought I might be having migraines and he wrote a prescription for topamax starting out at 25 mg in PM. I got the prescription but didn't take it until I went to my general family doctor. She concurs with the ER doctor so now wants me to take this medication. We will be beginning with a low dose at PM. My question is I am overweight, have high blood pressure and am prone to depression. I have read about the side effects in several places. At this time in my life I am ready to take anything to get through these headaches. I appreciate any one's incites into this.

Thanks,

Hello and welcome!

To answer your question, I've never known anyone to have results with less than 25mg of Topamax twice a day. The clinical trials of Topamax for Migraine prevention showed those results too.

Please be very careful if you have a history of kidney stones. There is now clinical evidence that Topamax increases the risk of developing kidney stones.

welcome again!

Hello and welcome!

Preventive meds can do a lot to help us regain control of our lives. That said, there are over 100 medications that can be used for Migraine prevention. Topamax is all the rage right now because it was the most recently approved by the FDA for Migraine prevention. Hopefully, you'll do well on Topamax. If you have any side effects that don't dissipate with time, keep in mind that you have many, many options. Also, don't hesitate to ask your doctor any questions you may have about Topamax or anything else. That's part of what you pay her for.

welcome again!

Hi, I'm new here. I just started getting migraines every day about 2 months ago. After consulting with a neurologist, the official diagnosis was "transformed migraines", which I believe is a fancy term for "get them everyday." I also get the "ice pick being stabbed through my right eye deal. Ive been started on Topamax, and have been tapering up. I'm currently on week 2, taking 1 25mg in the am, and 2 25mg in the pm. 2 weeks from now it will be 3 in the morning, and 3 at night, totalling 150mg. I think I stay at that dose for a month, then see the neurologist again. My question is, does anyone typically get relief at that doseage, or does it typically need to go higher? As of right now, I'm "enjoying " every side effect listed for this weird medication, but am still having the migraines daily, and still having to work, (and I have a job at a computer, which is awful at this point-given the medical conditon, and medication side effects...cant concentrate, poor memory, numb hands...)

When have other people started really getting relief with their topamax doses? I'm willing to live with these seemingly never ending side effects if the migraines will disappear, but so far nothing. If I'm still not experience relief at 150mg, why stay at that same doseage for a month? Why not ask the neurologist to try upping it a little? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated...and sorry to ramble on. No one here understands. After all, they're just "headaches!"

Hello and welcome!

Some people do well with just 50mg/day for Migraine prevention. It really depends on the person. It can take up to three months to know if Topamax is working, and the reason for holding at the same level for a month is to see if that level is going to do anything for you. While you're tapering up, it's really hard to tell. The goal is to get relief with as little medication as possible. Many doctors have patients spend a month at 50mg/day, the at 100mg/day if the 50 wasn't helping.

If you're having EVERY side effect, you really need to talk with your doctor ASAP. Some of the visual side effects especially indicate that you need to be taken off the medication.

welcome again!

Thank you for the welcome, and I'm not having literally every side effect, but more than any other medication I've ever been on. Drowsiness, fatigue, numbness in hands and feet, loss of coordination(slight), slight tremors in hands, abdominal pain(comes and goes), loss of concentration, food tastes like nothing, no appetite, anything carbonated tastes like poison, memory problems, especially simple word retrieval, (and scarier than that, simple spelling), and I'll catch my body trying to hyperventilate....I rest my cae. It's the damdest thing. All of that, on top of a migraine, every day, AT work no less. I'm just about at my wits end. I'm 23 and all of this just came out of nowhere, and I feel a bit overloaded....and I can't believe I'm at work. I should be in bed. It seems like when I'm sleeping is the only time I'm ever peaceful anymore. I look forward to the advice and info I'll receive on this site. I'm really glad I found it.

You're welcome. I don't remember how long you've been taking the Topamax, but after a few months, if the side effects keep you from functioning, it's time to talk to your doctor about tapering off it and trying something else. There are over 100 medications that can be used for Migraine prevention, so there's no reason to keep taking one that makes you miserable.

Are you taking a pain med or Migraine abortive for these daily Migraines? If so, how many days a week and what?

Sunday will start my third week. I have the migraines daily, some seemingly last the entire day. Topamax is all I was prescribed, and was told to take Aleve or Motrin, which I do, and they don't do much. I felt like because I wasn't having a migraine at the time the neurologist was examining me, that he just kind of wrote me off. I tried telling him that I had been yawning excessively lately out of nowhere,(t was getting to the point of yawning every 3 or 4 minutes), and the migraines started up at the same time, and he dismissed that. Then on THIS site, I read that the yawning is actually is pre-emptive symptom! I was describing the symptoms, and he seemed to think nothing of it when I told him the intensity of them had me throwing up at work daily, and having to wear sunglasses at my desk.
