Hi everyone-
So, I'm on day 6/7 of Topamax and I have a couple of questions. 1. Yesterday morning and this morning after I ate cereal for breakfast, my top lip tingled a little. And I just had a little snack and same thing, it tingles a little. I'm not sure if it's from the cold of the milk and the fruit I just ate or is this from the Topamax? The tingling lasts maybe a couple of minutes. I've just never had this before. 2. When do I add the second 25mg dose? Monday morning or Tuesday morning? (I started it this past Monday night) Thanks in advance for all your help! Sarah |

If you started Monday night, then I would think you would continue to take it in the evenings. However, you should double-check w/your doctor.
The tingling may be the first sign of the taste changes in food you will probably experience like sodas, fruit, ice cream, etc. Some people have tingling in the fingers & toes. "Migraines are caused by fears about sex. Once I got me a good sex partner and started gettin laid regular I quit having headaches."....some idiot |

Hi Pookie-
I know I continue to take it at night, I'm just not sure which day I'm supposed to add the second dose during the day. It probably doesn't matter, it doesn't have to be exact, I'm just a little neurotic at taking medications exactly how they are supposed to be taken. I already experienced the taste change with soda, that happened pretty quickly, about day 2 or 3, soda started tasting flat and just a little off, not bad, just off, not as sweet or something. The tingling in my top lip is just a little strange, so I wanted to make sure it was from the Topamax. Thanks! Sarah |

Hey Sarah
The new 25 mg dose, in my opinion it doesn't matter when you start it. And the tingling of the upper lip, I can only talk from my experience, I cannot tell you what you are experiencing and whether it is caused by the Topamax. But after I upped the dose a few times and experienced the numbness and tingling in my hands and feet I noticed that during/after I eat my tongue and my lips would go numb and tingle for a few minutes. It always goes away. Never happened before. I associate it with the Topamax. Hope it helps. |

Yeah, I think it is from the Topamax. That's the only explanation for it. The human body really is strange and will do strange things when you take medication. It's good though!

The tingling can be a potential side effect of topamax that can go away as your body continues to get used to this medication. If the tingling continues to be a problem, ask your doctor about a potassium supplement.

I'm not sure if it's from the cold of the milk and the fruit I just ate or is this from the Topamax? The tingling lasts maybe a couple of minutes. I've just never had this before. It does matter when you take your second dose, usually 12 hours apart. So if you take your dose now at bedtime, say 9pm, then the next dose would be 9am the next morning. 2. When do I add the second 25mg dose? Monday morning or Tuesday morning? Thanks Nancy. The tingling doesn't bother me at all, but my doctor did say that if the tingling becomes bothersome, to drink OJ or eat bananas to get some extra potassium.
As far as the dose, I know I should take it 12 hours apart, it was just a matter of which day to actually start taking the second dose. Thanks for your help! Sarah |

Sorry Sarah,
I would take it 12 hours after the last dose, whatever day it comes on...does that make sense? |

Sarah,
In regards to the tingly lips-I had that too with Topomax. Sometimes I had tingly fingers and feet too when my hands and feet got hot or cold or really wet like at the pool. It did go away eventually. Kinda weird but it will be worth it if the Topomax works for you!! Good Luck! Another Sarah |

I've been on topamax for a while now - the "tingles" kinda went away. I still get it sometimes, but not as frequently as when I was taking higher doses and tapering up. I noticed it more while tapering up.
As far as when to taper up - there is a link below that may help. http://headaches.about.com/cs/prevention/a/topamax_dos.htm Eileen |
