Hi everybody!

I was wondering if anyone out there has had success with taking Magnesium as a supplement?

How about in the ER or IV clinic as an infusion?

Thanks guys!

I've never been to the ER for migraine, nor have I had an IV infusion of magnesium, but I do take magnesium daily for migraine prevention and have excellent luck with it. Everybody's mileage varies, though.

Hi Jenny

I think I've had Magnesium in IV form. I'm sorry to say I've had so many infusions in my doctors office, I don't keep track anymore. Except if it is a PTC head issue, then steriods make my head pain worse.

I did take magnesium as a daily preventive for a time. While I was on that particular regime it seemed to work.

So, I guess I am no help at all. Roll Eyes

Jenny,

I take supplemental magnesium as part of my preventive regimen.

I've never had it IV, but know several people who have had it and it worked well for them. Melanie(HOST) is one of them.

The generally long periods of time between my Migraines are the result of working with a Migraine specialist to refine my preventive regimen. You can see my current regimen HERE.

Yes! The Er gave me magnesium twice with benadryl and it worked both times. I am adding it as a supplement at home as soon as I see my nero the first week in October.

I took magnesium for a couple of years, and it helped. Nothing has eliminated my head pain completely, but my head improved while I was taking the magnesium. I stopped taking it when I switched neurologists. The new doc was much more conservative than the old one, and the new guy wanted to eliminate as many meds as he could and start over. Not unreasonable.

i have i have! i took it as a supplement and it didn't do squat. then i had it in IV as a preventative when i was pregnant. it was hard to tell if it worked but it did make me sick. i felt really hot, icky and my stomach hurt. we started off 3x a week for two weeks, then twice then once. sometimes it would actually cause a mild headache. go figure.

I just added Magnesium to my little routine - I'll keep ya posted. So far it's been an odd week for me. I don't think it's associated with the magnesium though. It's just one of those things. Roll Eyes

Hi!

I have had a lot of sucsess with Mag.

Before I was diagnosed (not that I am really diagnosed at the moment!), .. so before we figured out what we think is wrong with me my Dr ran full blood work and 24 hour urine chemistry. I have been told that your true Mg values won't really show in blood tests and that urine chemistry gives a far better reading. My Mg ended up being:
2.9 mmol with normal ranges being between 6.0 - 8.5 mmol. So my Mg was non exsistant. So it has been a big help to me in many ways. It's worth requesting 24 hour urine chemistry. All sorts of sneeky things show up!

I take magnesium as well and not sure if it helps or not, but it was wonderful for constipation. Then I read a thread here that was talking about having to balance it with calcium which I was. The thread also said that for migraine prevention the calcium should be taken several hours apart from the magnesium.

Please Teri, or someone else in the know, fill in the blanks here.

Anyhow, when I quit taking the calcium at the same time as the mag, my constipation returned which makes me wonder if I am not absorbing it as well without taking the calcium at the same time??

I don't take calcium along with magnesium, because I haven't ever found a type of calcium supplement that I can tolerate. Every time I tried my innards would screech to a halt and I would become miserably bound up to the point that I worried about potential blockages. Since my calcium levels are excellent I take only the magnesium, with the collective okays of my doctors.

So...I haven't got enough experience to ever remember the ratios and the scheduling other that when I did try calcium (and was forced to take it for a while following my thyroidectomy), I had to take it at least four hours apart from my thyroid meds. I wish I could better fill in gaps here.

Magnesium is kinda transported in the membrane calcium, so they are both important to each other.

Dark green leafy vege's are excelent source of all electrolights and packed full of protein. I make up green smoothies in large batches which I freeze and drink once a day. They are 40% green vege (inculding one cucumber) and the rest is yummy fruit and berries. If anyone is interested in the recipe just let me know. There is no better way to get the good stuff in and it taste great. Also a great if suppliments are a bit to harsh on the system. ANNNND, because it is blended you start to take in all the nutients as soon as they hit your mouth!

I just ordered that book on the magnum book store list about magnesium and migraines. I started taking 1000 mg of magnesium yesterday . . . will keep you posted. I remember years ago that my acupuncturist mentioned magnesium to me but I never followed through on it. Now that I am desperate, I will try it.

So I've been taking 350 mgs Magnesium now for a couple weeks - I don't think it's enough. I need to get higher mgs. pills, and also I want to add in CoQ10 soft gels, and more calcium too. I feel like I'm just lining up my counter with suppliments! My husband trys to put them away in a drawer - and I say NOOOOO! because you know what they say - Out of sight - out of mind.

As soon as I don't see them - I'll stop taking them. I finally got on a schedule taking my multi and magnesium....I feel I can add to it now and not forget to take other things. LOL I'm such a dingbat! Big Grin
