I looked on the site's recommended doctors for Texas, but they are are more than a few hours away from Austin. If it comes to that I would travel to Houston, Dallas or San Antonio, but I would prefer not to.
Does anyone know of a good headache specialist in Austin? Anyone but Dr. Marci Roy. Thanks for any suggestions! Christine |

Christine,
Dr. Roy is the only Austin doctor for whom I've had any feedback over the last seven years. Maybe someone here has seen a good doctor there, and I haven't heard about it. That's certainly possible. If that doesn't pan out, maybe you could look at Dallas. I realize that would be about a three-hour drive, but lots of us travel farther. It's really worth it to get good treatment. ![]() Teri Robert Lead Expert, MyMigraineConnection terimmc@helpforheadaches.com

Thanks, Teri. I thought someone would surely stumble upon someone else! Oh well!
I just can't get over the fact that she keeps pushing topamax on me. I've been taking it for the past 9 months and it is not working. I have chronic daily headaches and it boggles my mind. I just don't have that much faith in one drug. I can't work with a doctor that doesn't listen to me. She can't accept that this so-called "wonder drug" is not working. |

Christine,
I hear you! The last time I fired a so-called specialist, continuing to push Topamax was a primary reason. You're absolutely right to be looking for a new doctor. Migraine specialists just aren't as plentiful as we'd hope. There are entire states where we've been unable to find one. My state is one of those. When I need to see a specialist, I either drive eight hours to Philadelphia or fly to Dallas. You might give some thought to seeing Dr. Krusz in Dallas. ![]() Teri Robert Lead Expert, MyMigraineConnection terimmc@helpforheadaches.com

Thanks for the referral. If it comes down to it, I may have to drive/fly to Dallas.
It's definitely not like living in the tri-state area (NY-NJ-CT) where I used live, where the doctors were plentiful. Such slim pickins in the heartland! I have a follow-up appointment with Roy in February. I plan on keeping it for now, for lack of other options. I've kept a detailed headache journal for the past six months that show no sign of headache improvement, despite my own efforts (strict adherence to medication limits, restricted caffeine intake, strict sleep schedule, weekly exercise, etc.) and despite taking 8 months worth of topamax. I tell her I'm taking Maxalt for my terrible headaches yet sometimes it is not even effective at taking away the pain (of course limited to twice a week). Does she care? no. She says it is a good drug and to keep taking it for my migraines. She gives me Naproxen to take two days a week for moderate headaches. Does that work? No. Does it matter? No. Keep taking it. Sorry for the gripe session! Having headaches and migraines nearly every day for three and a half months is driving my bonkers. And I've never had a doctor so flippant about my concerns. |

Hi Christine! I am actually in a Dallas hotel room as I type this post. I saw Dr. Krusz on Monday and had the best visit. I flew in from Virginia and plan on doing this again if need be.
To think I lived in Shreveport, LA, three hours away, two years ago! I wish I had found him then. He is the one doctor I have found that listens! Really and truly listens to his patients. He answered all my questions and his staff was absolutely wonderful. Off my soapbox, I just wanted to let you know that the trip to Dallas was well worth it for me. I posted about my visit in this folder. Please let us know how you are doing Laura Forum Moderator ***You're welcome to enter your birthday, etc in the Celebrate folder so we can party with you!! =) *** |

Hi Christine,
I was curious if you had your doctor's visit yet? If so, how did it go? I had a phone follow up with Dr. Krusz the other day and will have another one in a couple of weeks. What a great specialist!! I hope your visit goes/went well Laura Forum Moderator ***You're welcome to enter your birthday, etc in the Celebrate folder so we can party with you!! =) *** |

Hi, Christine! I just have a question for you... I'm in Austin - you said anyone BUT Dr. Marci Roy - have you been to her and didn't care for her? I finally saw her yesterday, and I really liked her... she took her time w/ me, listened really well... I'm just curious, is all... Thanks, Elizabeth |

Sorry I'm a little behind on my posts...
I haven't seen Dr. Krusz yet, although that is a real possibility. It's just that I started a new job this week and taking time off really isn't in the cards for me at this time. I've been thinking of seeing a neurologist in Austin that specializes primarily in Botox. Five years ago I took Botox for almost two years and it helped me so much that I didn't even take preventive medication. As for Dr. Roy, she may be a good headache specialist. It's just that I have moderate daily chronic headaches plus weekly migraines. And I'm not a simple case because I don't misuse over the counter or prescription medication. Instead of my headaches getting better on her 10 month regime of Topamax, they are getting worse. And I just don't think she wants to fess up to the fact that her wonder drug isn't working. Sure, I may have hypothyroidism that contributes to headaches, but my TSH levels are under control. I just don't think the preventive medication she is giving me is working. And an unwillingness to change from Topamax to something else is really what troubles me. So after seven months of spending $250 on Topamax each month she adds another drug to the mix, Pamelor. I keep a detailed headache journal and I have had only one good month out of ten months of nearly every day headaches. I can't live this way. I tell her the Maxalt isn't effective as it used to be in relieving my migraines. She says to use it anyway. I tell her the Naproxen really doesn't work on everyday headaches. Does it matter? No. How long does someone have to take a medication before she decides it doesn't work? In the meantime, I'm suffering here. |

I'm so, so sorry, Christine. She actually switched me AWAY from Topamax, which I was thrilled about... I'm sorry she's not working out for you. That really ##### (sorry, couldn't think of another word, there - I'm tired!). She gave me Naproxen as well, among 4 other scripts... I know that's probably not going to do much - so I do agree w/ you on that one... Thanks for answering me, though - it's good to know the pros and cons of each doctor... If you find another one in/around Austin - let me know, ok? Thanks - and, I wish the best to you... Hugs - Elizabeth |

Christine,
I understand how difficult it is to take time off from work, especially at a new job but if there is anyway to do so, I think you will benefit greatly! Like you said, you are suffering and unhappy with your current doctor; time for a new one. Of course I keep recommending Dr. Krusz; I was just so happy with him.... Please keep us posted on how you are doing in the meantime Laura Forum Moderator ***You're welcome to enter your birthday, etc in the Celebrate folder so we can party with you!! =) *** |

Elizabeth,
I am so happy that your meeting with Dr. Roy went really well. I wouldn't let my disagreements with her discourage you. We all have our own communication issues to deal with. And communication is the foundation of a good relationship with a doctor. I do think that Dr. Roy's Headache Clinic has a good set up for people who need emergency IV care. Although I have never used it or have been offered it because my headaches are more of a chronic nature. They also provide Depakote shots that supposedly break a headache cycle. Although I am not a candidate for that because I am allergic to the medication. I have a Feb. 18th follow up appointment with Dr. Roy. And for lack of other available options right now I may still keep it because I believe in giving second and third chances. But we'll see! With that said, I am happy to hear your appointment went well. I hope your treatment plan helps you. Christine |

Thanks, Christine... She DID mention shots (I work VERY close by), but I wasn't sure exactly what she meant by that... she just said if I had a REALLY bad migraine, that I could come in, and they'd give me a shot). So, the shot is Depakote, then? Nothing else? Interesting.... Thanks for the info, I appreciate it. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you on your follow up appt. this month... I hope it goes well... let me know, ok? Elizabeth |
