Saw my migraine specialist, Dr. Mark Green at New York Presbyterian, yesterday. A very good visit as usual. He really gets it now that I can't take anything with constipation as a side effect due to the high dose of Elavil I'm on for my fibromyalgia sleep disorder. He suggested Verapimil, I asked what side effects I could expect, he said constipation, I said no, he said that's right you can't do that, can you? Perfect.

He thinks the reason I relapsed mid-Jan is I tried to taper off the Frova as preventive too soon. Twice I tried taking just 1/2 a tablet in the morning and both times I got a migraine. And that seems to have kick-started them again. But that means this is just a little setback, because the Frova was working the first two weeks of Jan, so once I've been back on 2 a day for a while, it should settle my brain down again just like it did.

BUT...DON'T let me get unrealistic hopes about this. There are no guarantees in life. I'm still going to assume that my migraines will continue as is until I've officially reach menopause. So remind me to check my ticker and not to get my hopes up til it hits 365 days!!! I just noticed it's 29 days today so my period is one day late -- I've made it one monthly cycle!)

Anyway, he wrote me new scrips, gave me lots of samples, and confirmed that my full bed rest approach makes sense, since one of the diagnostic criteria is does movement make it worse. So I'm not moving til I reach menopause!!! Just kidding.

BTW, I always take him a copy of my migraine diary and meds list, both of which I keep on the computer. He really appreciates that.

And I always chat with his receptionist and make nice small talk. She loves me now and actually had some Frova samples stashed away the doc didn't know about and gave them to me!!!! She's a sweetie. She's a migraineur, too, so she knows.

Bless those who understand.

LauraSue.
(I'm 55, have had severe migraines for over 4 years due to menopause, plus I have fibromyalgia. I take Imitrex plus Anaprox as an abortive and am working with my migraine specialist to find a preventive. I keep a detailed migraine diary and have made significant lifestyle changes to reduce my risk of migraines.)

Hi LauraSue,

Sounds like that doctor you have is a "keeper!" It's great that he listens to you and tries to find a plan that's good for YOU.

And that receptionist sounds great! The receptionists and nurses in the doctor's office are SO important!!! Hey, anybody who gives free sample meds is OK in my book!!! Big Grin

Glad things went well!!

Oh, I love it when a plan comes together. If we can just get your head to listen, we'd be all set!
