If you use triptans (Imitrex, Maxalt, Zomig, Amerge, Relpax, Axert, Frova) and have insurance, you may very well have run into insurance coverage limits on how many doses are covered per month. For quite some time, the average seemed to be nine doses. Now, many insurance companies are lowering the limits to 4-6 doses per month. The editorial section of the Providence Journal carried a wonderful piece yesterday by Migraine specialist Dr. Gary L'Europa, "Stop limiting migraine medicine." The piece begins... Continue reading Doctor speaks out about insurance limiting triptan Migraine medications ![]() Teri Robert Lead Expert, MyMigraineConnection terimmc@helpforheadaches.com

What an EXCELLENT article! Thanks for bringing it to our attention.
I was thinking the same thing before I read the article, "How do they get away with limiting migraine meds when they never would get away with limiting cancer, heart, diabetic, anethesia, etc., meds???" I am OUTRAGED! But very thankful there are doctors out there that care enough to do something to help us. |

Hi there
After I read his article and saw the link to express of views I was wondering if we should go ahead and email, or is it a state to state thing??? I'm not familiar with United Health, but it couldn't hurt to express our outrage, could it?? |

Teri, if it shows editing comments, all I did was fix the word "limiting" to get rid of the double i in the middle.
I'm noticing, as I clicked the link and read the article just now, that the title is off on the actual sharepost article, too. That one I don't have magic powers to fix, though. Dragondrool Forum Moderator ~~8=:>>>> |

I e-mailed. Only about 4 lines. I could have written a book. It looks like my BCBS limits triptans to one box a month. I know that's true of the ones I've seen (all but Amerge and Axert).
I love the analogy to insulin and chemotherapy. I wonder how a "regular" newspaper was progressive enough to publish it? Gretchen |

I emailed too, Gretchen. Silly me, I didn't put my address and phone number in the email. I got an email from them, asking me to resubmit with that info.

Yup, I emailed, too. Doesn't surprise me that UHC is involved. In my opinion (and as a former UHC policyholder) they are right up front along with some of the worst offenders when it comes to Draconian coverage criteria.
It's infuriating. |

Glad you emailed them! I just checked, and none of our letters have been published so far.
