Yep, the little black thingie sounds like a washer to me.

Sounds like the landlady is very picky indeed. I can't believe she's never learned that rental property, just like any other property, is subject to scratches and scuffs from time to time. She must've had renters that just totally trashed apartments before. Still, she's being unreasonable. Life comes with a certain amount of "normal wear and tear", and I'm pretty sure that most rental agreements allow for a certain amount of that. Nobody, including your landlady, ever lives in a completely perfect house or apartment. That's just the way life is.

As for the cracks in the floor of the other shower, perhaps it was weakened before you moved in. Things like shower bottoms do wear out, and unless you purposefully caused the damage (and who would crack a shower bottom just for fun, huh?), I believe the landlord has to make repairs. That's the way it is most places.

I wouldn't worry about her saying you have to leave, either. I don't think landlords have much pull in evicting over housekeeping issues unless it creates a biological or physical hazard, which I know yours doesn't. I would think that if she tried, you'd have grounds for claiming discrimination, especially with your health issues keeping you from doing much. You'd do everything and then some if you could.

Naw, you're not a wimp. It's good to be cautious with a piece of work like this lady sounds like. I understand why you don't trust her.

Every shower I've been in is weakest at the middle under where you stand, because it's generally hollow underneath. I'm sure the cracks didn't get their overnight. I'm betting it weakened over time, and anyone's weight on it could've caused a hairline crack.

If I was there, you can bet I'd be throwing some droolie muscle into cleaning for you. You're perfectly right in that this isn't worth jeopardizing health over. The last thing you need is a flare right now.

Healing energy hugs to you, dearie!

droolie

Solveig, I had no idea you were so tall! They grow them big in Norway, huh?

Take it easy, the kids are there to see you, not the house. Wink

Sol,

There are laws in every state about what repairs the landlord must make. I suggest that maybe Dave or you try to find out what those are.

For instance, where I live, if a landlord does not make required repairs within a reasonable amount of time after given notice (14 days), then a renter may go ahead and make them on their own and submit the receipt to the landlord for up to $700.00--and the landlord deducts that cost from the next month's rent. I'm sure your state probably has a similar law to protect its renters. I don't think it's legal for her to make you pay for repairs...Or at least it sounds very wrong. This is a little known law for many renters--you might want to check it out. It may be way different where you live, but it's worth finding out either way. I would hope they have something like that instated to protect their renters.

Take it easy, OK? During the semester I have no time to clean and I have it a lot easier on the health than you do, and by reading your post you've done a lot more than I can manage in a few hours on a good day!
