Hi guys, perhaps someone will have some experience with this. I know nothing about bruises.

I went to the ER a few weeks ago because I developed a bruise on my leg that was hard and swollen, and warm to the touch. It was huge, ugly, and black. I don't know how I got it; all I know is that on the plavix and aspirin it's impossible not to get bruises easily. I have them everywhere at present.

Anyway, at the ER they told me I had a very bad hematoma (blood vessels broke and leaked up under the skin) and that it would be fine, no clots or anything. They did an ultrasound of my leg just to be sure.

Well, 2 weeks later the bruise has faded but it's still there and still the same size. Also, in the middle, there is a hard lump. I think it's a vein, but I have never had a lump there that I am aware of...Or a large vein. I've been checking it everyday. It's neither getting larger but it is not going away. Scar tissue maybe?

Any ideas or advice? Should call my doctors, huh?

If you bruised the vein - it may be hard under the surface for a while. I had this happen - oh and it hurts like the dickens if you bang it so do everything you can to avoid it - it will bring you to tears - trust me!

I don't think it would hurt to follow up with your doctor - just to be sure - but at the same time - I know it does take some time to heal if it was a deep bruise.

Since there was no clot or anything - it should be fine - but if you are worried about it - it wounldn't hurt to give the dr. a ring and let him know what happend. It may not require a visit - but let him know that you were in and had this done (if he doesn't know already).

Oh, and I think you can do the old alternate heat/ice deal on it too - that may help....but again you can check with the good doctor on that one.

I take a baby aspirin for a deformed carotid artery and I have some serious bruising.

I've had a couple bruises like you describe and sometimes I don't know where I got them.

I think if you've had the ultrasound and nothing is getting worse, I'd hang tight for a while.

Hello there,

Is the lump new? Was it there when the bruise started and when you went to the ER and had it checked out?

My first thought is if it is different than before and still bothering you two weeks later a call to the doctor is in odor. But that is just my two cents worth!

I had the lump when I went to the ER, which is why it was scary in the first place!

I will keep an eye on it...none of my bruises are going away, though. They fade, but weeks later I can see a discoloration on my skin where it was. I am on last (8th) week of Plavix and then I taper down to aspirin only.

It's just weird to see bruises hang out for so long. My catheter insertion cut is still prominent, too. It is not swollen or hurting or anything, but it's as clear as day as if I just cut myself.

I'll bet it gets better after you're off the Plavix. But just so you know, it's possible to get some bruises like this with aspirin - lumps and long time discoloration. BTDT
