I am wondering if others who went OFF topamax had a hard time and felt awful while going off of it. This is my third day of tapering down and I feel awful. My joints ache horribly and my head is pounding. Just wondered what everyone else went through and what kinds of problems they experienced.

Hi there. I was on Topamax for 3 weeks before being told to wean off due to severe depression and flu like symptoms. I was only on 50mg daily at the time, so went down to 25mg for a week and then stopped - under advice from my GP. Yes, I would say that it took about 2-3 weeks after stopping for me to feel that the topiramate was out of my system, although of course the migraine vertigo symptoms remained! The most vivid symptoms I remember whilst weaning off and just after were extremely vivid dreams/nightmares about being trapped or terrified of things. Otherwise just general foggy head, achey and bad stomach.
Good luck! I am about to try Lamictal.

I tapered off of Topamax after about three months of using it. I weaned off of it slowly under the guidance of my neuro and this helped reduce any side effects. If I remember correctly it took about two or three weeks.

I hope you feel better soon Smiler

Hi,

Topamax needs to be tapered off slowly. We have some information HERE, but always talk to your doctor about this type of thing.

My doctor has me going down to 50 mg for 4 days, then down to 25 mg for 4 days, then off. I am feeling like crap (to put it bluntly). My doctor said I might not feel great but he really wants me off the topamax as quick as possible. I'm willing to do it to get off the stuff and just wondered if everyone felt like crap too. It helps to know you're not alone when you feel like dog doo!

I just slowly tapered off toapmax....and it felt like my brain was being pulled in 10 different direction...which probably makes no sense...but I felt strange in the head for a few weeks!
