Heyyyyyy all
As most will know, I see Dr William B Young in Pennsylvania for my migraines. Last time I was there, *nov 12* he wrote up an ER protocol. A list of 3 drugs to use in the ER should I be in need of treatment there.
Benadryl IV, Magnesium Sulfate IV, and another med IV who's name escapes me. Skillet *why does that med name always have to escape me!?* ahhhh! its chlorpromazine. sheeesh

So yesterday I was in SM*which is a rarity these days*, so I went to the hospital. Since I had an episode of complete inability to talk that lasted for 15 minutes, about an hr prior to the ER, they pushed me up the triage list and I was seen within 5 minutes of arrival.

When I was called in, the doctor asked what steps I had taken to try and abort my migraine before the ER, I told him what meds I had taken and when. Then he asked what worked for me in the ER. This gave me the perfect opening.

"well, if you would be so kind as to hand me my purse, I have an ER protocol written by my neurologist" So he handed me my purse, I fished out my *photocopy* (never originals, in case they just rip it up) of the protocol. His eyes widened when he saw that it was an American doctor Big Grin. Then, to test the knowledge of the doctor, he said " so what'd he say these all were for?" so I went through all the meds one by one.

So he says " all right, I'll do a bit of research. I don't much like chlorpromazine, so i think i'll likely just give you mag sulfate and benadryl to start. but i'll be back."

I said " Thank you doctor" and he said " no problem, we're not used to American ER protocols, but doctor's orders are doctor's orders". Music to my ears Big Grin

He came back and said that chlorpromazine had too many side effects and mag sulfate had very few, so he'd start with benadryl and mag sulfate, and if that didnt work, then hed administer chlorpromazine.

The nurse came in with the IV. botched the first one Roll Eyes (have a nasttttttttyyy bruise to show for that) and managed to get it the second try lol. They started me on a heart monitor * protocol with mag sulfate for some reason* I told them before they even hooked me to the IV that I would be tacchychardic, and it wouldn't be the fault of the meds. I was just like that with migraines. yes yes they said. sure enough, they freak out when they see my heart rate. LMAO

Migraine was gone within the hour and has stayed gone since. This is a very good thing. Yes

So of course, once again, Dr Young has worked his magic, even in Canada.

Have a pain free day/night/week/month/year/whatever!
LOVE YA ALL
Bim

Wow! I am glad that they actually listened! That must be a change huh?!?!

Did the benadryl and magnesium sulfate work, or did he end up giving you the chlorpromazine anyway?

Hope you are feeling much better today! This must have been a much better experience then you are used to up there huh?!

Now if you can only find out what nights that Dr. is working and only *have* to go to the ER those nights........(hopefully never have to go again, right!!!! Fingers Crossed)

Eileen, the mag sulfate and benadryl worked just fine, no need for chlorpromazine. just went home. LOL.

So let me get this straight. What your suggesting is I time my status migrainouses to happen only when he is working? *just teasing you* great idea, lets see if it works Razzer

I felt better all of yesterday, but of course, i realized today I am due for my period any minute now... we all know what THAT means!

Yes, tell your head you can only go into SM while the nice doctor that listens to you is working. - Your head should listen to you! Razzer

Well at least since you've seen Dr. Young your Status Migrainous times have been less and less - which is wonderful! Thumbs Up

Hooray! Do you think your ER doctor has a friend with a similar philosophy that could work in Jamie's ER?
