Discipline. Ugh.

I've been fighting several issues that could be helped if I had better discipline. Specifically, I need to get back to better nutrition and an actual meal schedule to help address my glucose levels and lose weight.

To lose weight, I've had to limit myself to no more than 800 calories per day. Yeah, well, that's just not a level that can be maintained.

My glucose levels have been running too high -- partly because I've not been as good as I should be about what I eat and partly because diabetes can be progressive.

So...

After 10 years of telling doctors that something was wrong, my doctors have done the blood work to confirm hypothyroidism. My PCP started me on a low dose of Armour thyroid, and we'll test again in 2 months to see if it needs adjustment.

My PCP also added a new med for type II diabetes to my regimen. It should help address insulin resistance, which could help me with weight issues.

I WILL
  • establish and maintain a better schedule and do better to eat the right foods, not the wrong ones.
  • be more vigilant about checking my glucose levels
  • exercise more
  • be more disciplined

Wow Teri! 800 calories! I can hardly sustain on 1500! Sometimes I let myself up to 1700, which I tell myself is fine. As long as I am not eating the "maintain" weight number, a few calories over 1500 is OK. I was given 1500 by a weight trainer when I was able to make it to the gym regularly. I can't even imagine trying to only eat 800 calories.

I think when I calculated it, the calories I lost on a 1500 per day diet added up to a pound of weight each week, because I was eating something like 2300 calories per day in reality.

I wish you the best of luck. I am trying to eat my 1500 cal and get 30 minutes of activity in a day.

I got to sparkpeople.com as well to help me stay focused and keep me on task. It's also a diet and nutrition site, and the best thing is, it's totally free. You might want to check it out, maybe you will see something there that can help you!

Teri,
Wow, I don't even think My PCP even put my calerie intake for that low. Woe, Talk about discipline! I was put on a 1500 I think I can't remember. I had my Dr. check up this last week and found out over the last year i've lost 20lbs! on my diet with diet and exercise. Its taken some time and it can be done with friends and support! And you do have our support!

For me the discipline was hard and the changing the foods was hard, BUT, now I don't even like having the foods I use to like to eat My entire taste buds have changed! It takes a while but its so worth it! I know you can do it! Keep up the good work!

Thanks, Leeloo. My diabetes educator had given me eating plans for 1500 or 1200 calories, but I gained weight. UGH. At 800, I lost 85 pounds, but once I went back up to about 1200, I gained most of it back.

It seems that the thyroid meds and new diabetes med is helping. I've lost a few pounds since starting them.

Activity shouldn't be a problem. Yes, I sit here at the computer for hours, but I have a treadmill right here in my office. Just need to be more disciplined about using it. There's really no excuse for me not doing it.
