Hi guys. Is regular pork (like pork chops) a trigger for anyone? Or have any of you ever heard this before? Someone told me today that I should not eat pork if I have migraines. I have read a TON of information over the years and have never heard this. I know that sausage is a trigger for me, but that is because it contains MSG. And bacon can be a trigger, due to nitrates. But regular pork?? Not sure. I have never noticed that it trigger a migraine before. Just wondering what you guys think about this one.

Thanks,
Sherry

Sherry,

Pork is indeed a potential trigger food. Have you see the workbook with our article, Managing Migraine – Migraine Trigger Foods? The workbook might be helpful for you.

Thanks, Teri. I will look at that. After all of these years, I have figured out most triggers. Pork has never seemed to bother me. I really don't need another food I can not eat!!! It can be frustrating at times, especially when eating out,as I am sure you know.

You're welcome, Sherry. I hope pork isn't a trigger, but triggers can change over time.

I feel very lucky not to have any food triggers. With diabetes and heart disease, eating out is difficult enough! With traveling, I'm glad to see more and more hotels put small refrigerators and microwaves in their rooms. That does make it easier.

Just wanted to update you guys - I found out tonight that pork is now a trigger for me!!! I ate pork chops again tonight and bam , here it came within the hour. That really stinks becasue I was looking forward to a pork chop sandwich tomorrow!

Regular pork never seemed to bother me in the past. My theory is that since I am not on a good preventative right now, my threshold for triggers is just very low, and that is why more things seem to be triggering me easier. What do you guys think? So, maybe once I get my new preventatives straightened out and working well again, maybe I can add some of my new trigger foods back in. I have read all about triggers being "stackable" and have used that theory to my advantage, I think, in the past. Like I will avoid certain things like bacon, if I am not feeling really well. Does this make sense to anyone or am I the only one? I would really like your input on this one.

Thanks,
Sherry

Sherry,
That makes perfect sense to me. Triggers ARE stackable, and if you don't have something that lets the stack get taller before you have a problem with the triggers, it only stands to figure that you'd have a lower threshhold for the stacking than if you were on a good preventative regimen.

(Did that make sense? Darn postdrome is killing my writing ability!)

Made perfect sense to me, Jamie, but I am a little off myself!! I am glad your migraine is gone, and hopefully by tomorrow you will be back to normal!

I'm new to all this stuff, and was going to ask about the triggers but you've answered the questions, when you explained the stacking. That makes sense. I was rather overwhelmed when I saw the list of triggers and what to avoid. I may as well not eat at all. LOL I assume not all foods are triggers for everyone and everyone is different? How long after eating one that is a trigger will you know that it is one? Its so difficult to figure out what is causing these stupid things. I never had the migraines this bad till about 4 months ago and now they are just out of control! I feel like an alien has taken over my body haha. I have to laugh, so I don't cry when it's so bad I can't stand it. At least I finally got the script for midrin filled. Thanks for explaining it to me.

Some people don't have any food triggers. I suspect I am one of those. Other people may have several food triggers. I doubt anyone is triggered by every food on that list, although I guess it is possible.

Managing Migraine Food Triggers explains the food trigger thing pretty well, if you haven't found it already.
