Hi gang, I just wanted to pass along a copy of an email I received from Senator Frank Lautenberg:
Thank you for contacting me about funding for migraine research. I appreciate hearing from you on this issue. Almost 30 million Americans suffer from migraines, which are much more painful and debilitating than an average headache. The symptoms of a migraine can be so severe that nausea, vomiting, and extreme sensitivity to light and sound can result. I agree that further research is needed to help, prevent, and find better treatments for migraines. Throughout my time in the Senate, I have consistently advocated for increased funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), and other research and outreach programs. As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, please be assured that I support efforts to provide adequate funding for migraine research and will keep your letter in mind as the appropriations process moves forward. Thank you again for writing. Frank_Lautenberg@lautenberg.senate.gov (I haven't been well for a few weeks now but you are all in my prayers! Many Blessings, Lori) |

I got this yesterday from my senator!!
Cindy Dear Ms. XXXXXX: Thank you for contacting me regarding increased research funding for headache disorders at the National Institutes of Health in the fiscal year 2009 budget. I appreciate the time you took to write and welcome the opportunity to respond. I strongly support biomedical research and believe it holds tremendous promise to develop new treatments and possible cures for a myriad of diseases and conditions, including headache disorders. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is comprised of 27 institutes and centers, which fund and conduct medical and health research and provide an invaluable resource for health care professionals and the public. Since coming to the Senate, I have worked hard with my colleagues to increase the budget of the NIH and will continue to support funding for important advances in health research. On February 4, 2008, President Bush submitted his fiscal year 2009 budget proposal to Congress. His budget requests $29.465 billion to the NIH, which provides no increase in funding. On March 13, 2008, I voted to support Senator Arlen Specter's (R-PA) amendment to the Senate Budget Resolution (S. Con.Res 70) that would increase funding for the NIH by $2.1 billion. You may be pleased to know this amendment passed by a vote of 95-4. I am hopeful that this increased funding will help all areas of NIH research that have been less funded in the past, and that it will maintain our commitment to supporting biomedical research. Again, thank you for writing. Please know that as a member of the Appropriations Committee, I will keep all your comments in mind as the fiscal year 2009 appropriations process continues. If you have any further questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact my Washington, D.C. office at (202) 224-3841. Best regards. Sincerely yours, Dianne Feinstein United States Senator |
