I haven't written in awhile, but find myself here because I am frustrated and I know everyone else gets tired of hearing about it. I went to the Headache Clinic at UNC Chapel Hill this month and was soooo disappointed. I have been to so many different doctors with so many different ideas and it seems none of them work.
The doc at UNC told me not to take any opiates, even if I had surgery, go to sleep at the same time every night, only varying 30 minutes, no reading in bed... and everything else she could tell me about her "current study." She gives me Toradol, Phenerghan, and Seroquel to take as an abortive. The Toradol kills my stomach, I actually missed work the next day from the nausea and diarrhea from it. I called her back yesterday, no response, called today 3 times, to have her secretary call me back and tell me..to expect some pain, take a Maxalt and some advil. HELLOOOOOO!!! Those things do not work, and it is not just "some pain"....that is why I am visiting a doctor that gets $750 for an OFFICE VISIT ONLY!!!!I am furious. All that money and basically I get a "suffer through it". I was not very nice to the receptionist who called with the message, and told her that this looks like another dead end for me!! Why are doctors so afraid to give you opiates occasionally??? Sheesh you would think I popped them all the time. There are days when I don't need any, but there are some days I need 1-2 Lortab or Darvocet. Are they really such awful drugs?? I am a firm believer that you only live once.. and if it takes me two Darvocet once in awhile to enjoy my life then what is wrong with that. Anyway, on with the search I guess for a new DR. I should have known at the visit that she was not going to work out, everytime I did not agree with what she said she started spouting out percentages and "proven facts" Thanks for listening...all advice on wonderful doctors in NC welcome!!! I'm sorry you weren't happy with your appointment. I know how it feels to have all your hopes smashed after one such visit.
The issues is reducing your Migraine pain. Clearly, your doctor is not listening to you. This quiz may help you determine if your doctor is right for you. Is Your Doctor Right For You? Usually rescue medications, like lortab or fioricet are our third line of defense in treating Migraines. First we have our preventive medications, next abortives, then if our abortives fail or we can't take them, we use rescue medications. We have some great information on these three types of medications you can find HERE |

Angie,
I'm sorry your doctor's visit was such a disappointment but I'm glad you're taking the steps to find a new doctor. I get migraines several times a week and I'd be in dire straights without my rescue meds. Good luck!! I feel for you, Angie. I'm still trying to figure out if my new doc is a keeper or not. Hope that you can find a new doc soon.

Angie-
can't type much due to a elbow injury. just wanted to let you know you're NOT alone in your experience. In fact, I'm pretty sure I know who your doctor there was... I live and work in Chapel Hill- so I was reluctant to give the clinic the boot- you know- convienance, ease of access, blah blah. the neuro lobby is SO not migraine friendly (before you walk back behind the first closed door to the quieter HA clinic) Loud TV, flickering flourescents, etc. I'm now seeing Dr. Adelman in Greensboro. A little bit of a drive, but nothing compaired to what some of our forum friends do... I agree- UNC does some great research. when i had the resident/fellow, it was okay for me- i was first starting out, and went through the typical first try preventatives. the one thing they did have, however was TONS of samples. I got to try all of the triptans before finding my my favorite couple- frova and amerge. when i started coming to the forum, i learned a lot... and soon i realized i knew more than my second resident (see last year's poems- "Dr. O") and needed to go elsewhere. I'm very glad i left, and totally credit the education i got here for the fact that i was confident enough to engage the resident in good thoughtful questions re:therapeutic options. He didn't like that. I didn't like that he didn't like that- and I said my goodbyes and left. So, you're not alone! (Oh- ignore my sig- haven't updated in a while= Had 2 really awful migraines this week alone) Cheers from another Tar Heel!

Millsy,
Comparing the "strenght" of opioids by the number of mg doesn't work that way. They simply aren't the same and can't be compared mg to mg. One reason Stadol may be more effective than oral meds is that nasal delivery is quicker than oral.
