I am looking for a good specialist in the Chicago area. I do not want to go to Diamond. Besides the upsetting $250 non-reimbursable fee I have now heard some things that were not too complementary from a doctor I really respect. Thats the 2nd one.

I need to use insurance so I think that leaves out the Robbins clinic? I heard he only takes medicare/medicaid or cash? Is that true?

Anyone know of someone in our area?

I think I am firing MHNI....

be blessed-

Dawn,
I am sorry you are not getting the relief you need. I went to MHNI for two years and finally fired them to see a better specialist. 2 year and they didn't make a dent in my pain. You clearly don't want the Diamond Clinic. I have found it to be better that MHNI, but just cause it been go for me, it just may not be the place for you. But you know, its not really the clinic that matters, (for MHNI or Diamond)Its about the right doc that can help. I don't know of any other specific places, but I hope you find one soon! Its time you get some relief hon Good Luck I am wishin you all the luck in the world to find that specialist. Do let us now you are.

Thanks Alaura. I hope YOU are doing better.

I am actually not firing MHNI as much as I am my new doctor. I find him abrasive and not compassionate. I have been going to MHNI for 20 years! But the doctor I had most recently left and moved to pennsylvannia and this new guy, well, I am just not very confidant in him.

Thanks for your well wishes! They are returned to you three fold!

be blessed-

Hi Dawn,

I'm so sorry your new doctor isn't the "right" one for you.

Are you able to travel? Or did you need to stay close to home?

I'm sure you've seen this already but I'll give it to you just in case:

• Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists

Good luck and please keep us posted Good Luck

Dawn,

I wont say a name, but I am almost certain I know of the doctor you have. He has the bedside manner of a razor blade and is very arrogant. In my opinion, he shouldn't be working with people. I stayed with him way way to long and then switched to a female neurologist there and liked her(Prestaggard). If it does happen to be the same doc, I understand firing him! Again, good luck dear, I hope you will find that right doc and get the treatment you need.

Are you able to travel to Racine, WI? Wheaton Franciscan - All Saints has a really nice comprehensive headache clinic run by Traci Purath, MD. I believe she's on the recommended specialist list mentioned above. I know there are a few of us from the Milwaukee area who have been seeing her. My experience has been nothing but positive and so has my progress.

Yes, it is true, Robbins clinic does not bill for insurance. I don't know about Medicare/medicaid, but as far as cash, I do know they expect payment upon service.

Aside from Robbins and Diamond...I checked the recommended specialist list and there is one other here. But I don't know anything about that dr. I wonder if there are any headache specialists at RUSH hosptial? I've never looked into it though.

Have you found a new dr. yet or still looking? Good luck!

Take care.
Hugs,
Kelly

Hi Alaura- No, the doctor I was speaking of has not been at MHNI very long at all. He was hired, I believe to add to staff when Dr Rozen left. As it turned out I didn't have to fire him. He left "very suddenly due to personal reasons". I think dear old Dr Joel found he may have slipped up letting this one in the ranks. They have actualy switched me to Dr Weintraub and I have yet to have my first appointment as this all just happened and I am going to Mayo again in a couple of weeks - they are going to give me their final decision on whether or not I really do have psuedotumor/IIH. Oh! That reminds me! I need to call up there to see if I should stop my Diamox before their LP....

Hi everyone thanks for the responses! I guess for now my calls for a new doctor are on hold. I will see what Mayo says and I will see how things go with Weintraub. I know I have a friend i met there and she really credits him with giving her an almost normal life back.

Oh! And Dr Prestegaard seems very good too.......

Happy New Year

I figure Dr W can't be more arrogant or have a worse bedside manner than Dr S has. (We used to jokingly call him He Who Would Be Called God lol!) And Dr H was no winner either believe me. I called him in tears I hadn't had an appt in months because he told me not to come back till I had gone to Mayo and his response was....well. I don't have any suggestions for you! I called Dr W for a refill of meds and they were really upset it had been so long since I had been there.

I am willing to give anyone a try for a time or two. If they rub me the wrong way or I feel like they aren't going to help I can always look elsewhere (again lol). (Well except that I can't and don't want to pay an extra $250 to Diamond to perhaps find out I am not happy there either)

Thanks for you support, especially as you have continued to have problems! You take care Alaura and may this New Year bring us all something better!

Thanks for the suggestion! I really appreciate it and will take it under advisement. Hinsdale Hospital is right by my house.

Happy New Year!

did I ever say what Mayo I went to? It was Minnesota. i sw Dr Mokri there who was very nice and very thorough. His ultimate diagnosis was transformed migraine. I asked him to explain that and he said the terminology differs from dr to dr and place to place but in his case he means that it has some aspects of migraine with aura and some of chronic daily headache and he is not trying to suggest that there is MOH involved (I was concerned about that).
I asked him if he wanted to recommend someone in the Chicago area and his only recommendation was anti-Diamond.
I know that lots of people are helped by them and lots of people have alot of confidence in them so I am not knocking them. He didn't say they are bad, he just feels they put you on too much/too many medications. I think he sort of feels the same about MHNI. But Mayo is very anti medication for migraines and other pain type issues (mainly anti-abortive but when I went to the PRC they also took me off some of my preventives), so that would probably color his opinion.
For now I will try again at MHNI and see if I like Dr Weintraub or think he can help. If not I may just call one of the major hospitals in the area and check out their headache specialists. Thanks to everyone who has responsded!

Dawn,

Good luck with your search for help with the doctors you are seeing!

On your comment about Diamond, I didn't take what you were saying as 'knocking them'. However, I did want to clarify something. Diamond has five different headache specialists practicing there. As we say around here, it is best not to pick a physician based on the clinic and I think the opposite is true, don't avoid the doctor because of the clinic. I think it would be quite hard to classify all five physicians that practice there in the same way. In my experience they are all quite different in how they approach treatment.

I respect that in the opinion of the physician you saw, he thought the doctors at Diamond prescribe too much medication. I saw a specialist at Diamond for almost four years. My specialist would talk about how people would come in from other parts of the country on tons of medications that he had to take them off of. I would bet that each specialist's opinion is different as to what "too much" medication is.

Again, I hope you find help and success at MHNI or another local specialist!

Kelly

Dawn, I was wondering if you had the LP yet? I think you mentioned the possibility of having one in a previous post. We took our daughter to Mayo for PTC/shunt issues in 2009, and it was a confusing experience, for sure! I was just wondering about your status.
