So, for the past year and a half of our marriage, I have been the sick one. As if constant migraines were not enough, I also get to drudge through trialling preventatives with horrible/mood alterning side effects, and to top that off I have just started antibiotics for a sinus infection.
Earlier this week, my DH's GP says that the stabbing pain DH's been having the past few days is from an inguinal hernia (which basically means there's a hole or weak spot in the lower abdomen and then an intestinal organ pushes against it or through it). The only correction of this problem is surgery. He is to have a consult with a surgeon, but it is not for two more weeks! And who knows how long it will be after that until the surgery and subsequent recovery is over! In the meantime, he is pretty much in constant pain. I think that he has barely slept this week. He is supposed to do as little lifting or moving around as possible, which means that I have to run the household all by myself! I was doing okay when we split the work, but I am not sure that I have the strength to do it all alone. I don't really know what outcome to hope for. I am scared that they will say that he is not bad enough to have surgery, and will leave him with the pain and nothing stronger than some lousy Aleve. I am afraid the surgeon will discover something worse. And I'm afraid that they will decide that he will need surgery because surgeries are scary. I need to be strong enough and well enough to take care of us, for as long as it takes for him to be well. I need to help him experience as little pain as possible and find a way to sleep. I need to help him not be scared of surgery if it comes to that. I don't mind taking care of things, in fact it's probably way past the start of my turn, but it would be so much easier if I wasn't in pain all the time. Anyway, thank you for listening and I would be grateful for any prayers or thoughts or anything you could send my way. Laurelin |

Laurelin,
My son had an inguinal hernia surgery last December. He was sixteen at the time of his surgery so your husband's surgery and recovery may be a little different. However, my son had an incision and had his hernia sewn up because of where his hernia was as opposed to having the surgery laparoscopically and using a mesh to close the hernia. Your surgeon should be able to tell you what to expect for your husband. My son did have an ultrasound and a catscan before we knew which course our urologist was going to take. My son had his surgery Friday and did go to school on Monday although he did walk very gingerly and had early dismissals from all of his classes. I also have a co-worker who had the laparoscopic surgery with the mesh. He was out of work for about 3 days and was also walking very carefully after he came back. He was probably in his early to mid 40's at this time of his surgery. My co-worker tends to push himself a little too much also. I hope this helps. I wish both of you the best of luck. Sending prayers and thoughts to both of you too. "Some days you're the dog; some days you're the hydrant." -- Unknown |
