Migraine

I just got a new script for Ultram 50 mg as a rescue med from my neuro... I'm under strict direction to use it only twice a week...which I think I'd want to do less.. I think I'm more afraid of addiction than my doctors are!

I have a friend who *always* tries her new meds at home... but I admit I haven't often done that... maybe it's foolish of me but I've never really had a bad reaction or even been very sleepy in response to any of my pain meds... and generally I'm stuck at work for 6 more hours... or wherever I am anyways.

Anyone here using Ultram... any thoughts or reactions on use? I see that it seems to have the standard side effects, dizziness, nausea.. nothing new for me! It wasn't what I was hoping for in a rescue med, but I'm up for trying anything nowadays!

It seems like a lot of migraine patients get Ultram. I've never taken it but I'm sure someone will be along soon who has.

My daughter is using the Ultram. She actually takes two daily and this is the first med in a long time that even seems to bring her headache down some. We came off for a couple of days because it was making her feel rather strange and very nauseated. She did notice the migraine got much worse for those two days so she started back on it today and we will see how that works. Good luck because I am hearing good things about the Ultram.

My husband takes Ultram for his chronic back pain(he has 2 herniated discs), and I have tried taking it(in desperation as a rescue med) for one of my bad migraines, and it had absolutely no effect on my headache at all. I usually use Vicodin as a rescue med (prescribed by my doctor) and that seems to work- I guess they are stronger. But I only use these as an absolutely last resort!

All I got from Ultram was insomnia. No help from the pain whatsoever.

Addiction may or may not be a concern, but you do need to concern yourself with Medication Overuse Headaches with any of your meds. Here's some info about that type of headache:

Yeah, I actually looked it up on this site first thing... it seems like most of the people who like Ultram are using it as a daily pain med... and those who use it as a once in a while type thing aren't as pleased.. but I'm trying to stay optimistic. Glad to hear something good from you, Melanie.

I've been really careful with all my pain meds thus far... and managed to avoid addiction, and MOH before I even knew it existed, so I'm feel pretty confident in that respect. Now, if I actually get some results, then I might have to start worrying about being careful! So long as they keep giving me drugs that don't touch the pain... we're in the clear! (what's the point in loading up on stuff that doesn't work?)

Overall, it sounds pretty mild, so I wasn't that concerned. It doesn't sound like it really knocks you out typically either, so that's nice on the one hand... not so much on the getting over the pain I guess.

I used it every day. My rheumatologist at the time wanted me to take it at bedtime, since it "usually makes people a bit groggy". Should have known right then and there that it would be an insomniafest for me.

I take Ultram Extended Release once and a while for back pain (my PCP gave it to me because I slip discs and pinch nerves in my back sometimes).

It is great for back pain, but it has never helped or prevented a migraine. I don't take it for that, but sometimes when I have taken it previously for back pain I'll get a migraine during the 24 hour period it lasts.

I do notice I get a light headache when it wears off 24 hours later, so I try to only take it when I really really need it.

The only two rescues I like are Vicoprofen and Fiorcet (the former more than the latter)

Isn't it interesting how different meds can work so differently in each of us? I am SO THANKFUL that tramadol (Ultram) works for me in ye olde Migraine department....

I took tramadol years ago, and I think it was a pretty good drug for me. I didn't have any addiction/dependence problems.

My dog is taking tramadol for his arthritis and back problems. He's 16 and weighs about 16 pounds. He was getting 25mg in the morning and 25mg at bedtime. This morning, he started shivering, which means he's in a lot of pain. I increased the tramadol to 50mg this morning, and he seems to feel better.

The tramadol has helped him tremendously. A couple of months ago, he was in extreme pain, shivering all the time. We experimented with several things, and the tramadol is the first one that has worked.

Amazing that dogs take people meds. He also takes hydroxyzine for his allergies and docusate (Dulcolax?) for constipation. We've both just started taking Miralax for constipation. He takes a doggie version of Celebrex.

I use the Ultram ER twice a day, every day, and I do think it tends to take the edge off my neck and head pain. I haven't really experienced any side effects. It doesn't make me drowsy or keep me awake, and I like it a lot better than other pain meds because it doesn't make me feel fuzzy or "high". I feel like I'm able to go about my business while I'm on it.

Thanks for sharing! I still haven't used the Ultram at all, I probably should have taken it for a spin by now, but I haven't been really desperate, and that's what I have it for. It's nice to hear it seems to be such an "alert" drug, as that's what I like!
