Hey everyone. I was hoping I could get some insight onto the drugs I am using to prevent my weekly migraines. My doc had me use Topomax, and for a while it actually worked. I mean, I actually went an entire week without a migraine, and thats something to me ): But it made me get these tingly sensations all over me that never went away. It was in my feet, hands, and head, so the doc said I should try something else. I kind of felt disappointed because the drug was working and I wanted to stay on it. Rather be tingly then have a migraine, ya know? But she sais its probably not a good thing that they were not going away.

Now I am on Amitriptyline. Its that anti-depressant, but im on the low dose of 10mg. Does anyone have any success with this drug? Since Topomax was working on me, could this one do so too? Im a little worried about the fact that its an anti-depressant :/ I dont want it affecting me too badly.

Any one with experience?

Hi Ally

My 14 year old son is currently taking Amitriptyline for migraine prevention. He is on 100mg with no side effects which is good. Smiler Unfortunately, the amitriptyline alone is not enough. Frowner He still has too many migraines too often. I think what the drug did for him was reduce the severity of the migraines.

We have a prescription for topamax. We are trying to put off starting it until school is out for the year. I would rather my son deal with any possible side effects during the summer.

With the preventatives you never know what will work for you. Our doctor said at this point it's a guessing game of which preventative to try next. My son had tried 2 other anti seizure drugs and had to stop each of them due to side effects. Topamax is in the same class and the doctor wants us to try that next.

Good luck with the Amitriptyline. I hope it works for you.

I currently take Topamax, and have for several years now. So far it has been the only preventative that has actually worked for me. It does not wipe out all migraines, now that would be nice! But it did take me from about 6 or more a week to 1 to 2 a week. I had the tingling in my face, hands, and feet as well, but after about six weeks it went away totally.

I can't remember all the preventatives I did try, the list is long, but so far this one works. I wish there was one that would help with the intractable migraines. I get those at least 3 times a year.

I'm currently on both and they seem to be working ok....although I think it's time to change it up since the side effects are a little undesireable.

Not that I can't handle the side effects, I just don't want them (eating everything in site frome the Amitriptyline and libido problems from both meds)

I went from topa to amitriptyline back to topa. The amitriptyline helped a bit with the migrains, I still got them, but not as often as if I wasn't on any medication. But it made me really sleepy. And I gained alot of weight in a short period of time. All I wanted was sugar, and after reading the fine print, I found that craving sweets was a side effect!! :s
Anyway, it might work for you. I took mine at night before bed. But then I went back to the topa because of the still getting daily headaches and weight gain. And far as being a antidepressant, since that was one of the reason it was prescribed to me, it actually helped my mood. Made me see life a bit better. Good luck to you! Message me if you have any questions
