Well, unfortunately, I got to try the new med, Treximet today. As far as migraines go, it knocked out what was headed to be a real doozy in about 1 1/2 hrs-gone-no pain left! That part was good. However, in that 1 1/2 hrs, I had to spend about 45 min. of it wondering what was going on.
Let me start by saying that I've never taken Imitrex-I've done OK with Frova and better with Maxalt. I also know that not all side effects hit every person and every med works different on every person. Having said that, I don't know if the migraine was as bad as the med or not-at this point, I think my Maxalt and Advil and even Toradol on top of it would have been better. In those 45 min., I had severe dizziness, severe nausea, my legs felt like wet noodles, muscle cramps of my neck/shoulder muscles, visual problems and the final straw-stood up and passed out! I think I scared my new front office person half to death. Needless to say, I went from "employee" to "patient" rather quickly. Once I came to and could stand up, I got hustled off to a bed to rest for a while. My doc wouldn't let me leave work until I could stand up and walk and feel OK. Today was my 1/2 day, but he wouldn't let me leave until he was certain I could drive OK. I will say this, all of those side effects left just as fast as they hit. Right at the 2 hr. mark after taking the new meds, things starting getting much better very quickly and by the time I drove home-about a 10 min. drive-and got something to eat, I feel almost fine. I've got the same jaw pain that I get from the Maxalt, but that's about it. If you tolerate Imitrex OK, then you'll probably be fine. My doc told me to keep the Treximet and if I get out somewhere without my Maxalt and can't get to it until the migraine is a real doozy, then take this, but he recommended that I go back to my Maxalt/Advil/Toradol cocktail mix since I tolerate it well. At least with that, I've never ended up in the floor. I never leave the house with out my "bag of tricks" so being away from my Maxalt/Advil/Toradol mix isn't likely to happen. Just thought you all would like to know first hand about the new meds. It's due to hit pharmacies in about 2 weeks. It just got FDA approval 4/18/08, so it's REALLY new. So much for the 2 week run without a migraine, but hey, I was only 1 day short of 2 weeks and that's the longest stretch since February. Guess I'll start counting days again! Lynn |

Lynn, I'm sorry to hear the Treximet treated you so badly. Imitrex works ok for me, but only if I use it with ibuprofen. It doesn't do much of anything for me otherwise.
At least it got rid of your migraine. -MJ my blog: http://rhymeswithmigraine.blogspot.com/ Why do I capitalize Migraine? Imitrex caused me to make my last migraine-related ER visit, but it wasn't for the migraine. It was for the Imitrex reaction. It was in 1995.
Imitrex squeezed the muscles in my neck so hard it began to cut off my air flow. How doing that is supposed to stop a migraine, I have no idea. I had been taking it for a while and the muscle squeezing had been getting worse and worse. That was my last dose of Imitrex. Sorry it wasn't good for you overall, but glad it did in the attack. http://sparklingwithcrystals.blogspot.com/ basilar-artery migraine, MAV, BPPV, migraine with and without aura, cluster headaches, but no tension headaches! Imitrex and I are best buddy's. Taking ibuprofen with it never seems to do much, so I probably won't be asking to try this. Sorry you had to go through this though. You've been through enough lately!!

Sorry to hear you had such a bad time with this!
But thank you for sharing the story. I just got a scrip for Treximet, and am going to give it a shot. Frankly, I don't care much for Imitrex, but I'll give this a try. I appreciate knowing what to look out for though. |

Thanks for sharing your experience with Treximet. I haven't seen my doc in the last 4 weeks, so I haven't been given the opportunity to try it, but my specialist will probably prescribe it when I see her at the end of this month. I tolerate a combo of Imitrex and naproxen well; in fact, I just took a dose, so I ought to do OK with Treximet.
However, it's probably going to be a $50 co-pay. My Imitrex is $25, and the naproxen is $10. Since my current combo is working, I wonder if it'll be worth the extra $15. But I'll probably try it anyway. Gretchen in Mississippi |
