Hello All,
I wonder if anybody out there has heard of using imipramine as a pain relief for background headaches ? My son Tom has been taking them for nearly four months and wondered if anyone else has had any success on these tablets.
He currently takes 30mgs at night alongside flunarizine for his SHM
Any comment would be useful.
Thankyou all very much
Regards
Sarah M and Tommy

Tricyclic antidepressants such as imipramine are sometimes used as migraine preventives. I take imipramine, 25 mg twice a day, for a condition called nutcracker esophagus (hence my forum name). It has no impact on my migraines. I don't know anything about using it for "background headaches." Would you want to submit that question to Ask the Clinician? If so, click HERE.

Dear Nutcracker
Thankyou for your input and I have now placed a question to the clinician.
Up until Christmas 07 Tom was taking topiramate as well as the flunarizine as he has been in considerable pain for some months . Alongside his SHM, he had a pin like pain in the middle of his forehead which appears to be affected by what he does and the environment he is in at the time but never goes away, he appears to go to sleep and then always wakes with this pin like pain.
He already had poor concentration, sleep pattern and memeory loss, and it was thought that the topiramate exacerbated this, so it was decided to take him off of it and try the imipramine.
I think the term is chronic daily headaches but we use background headache here so sorry for that.
I was just interested as at this present time there has not been any change in presentation ( in fact its got worse) and wanted to see if there was anybody else out there taking this drug, and if it was benefitting them in any way.
He has also been prescribed naproxen as diclofenac has not been very effective also.
We can only give him this twice a day when necessary but so far has only really relieved the headache pain not the pin pain,
Hopefully we will be getting to the bottom of all this soon.
Thanks again for your time
Keep well and thinking about you all here in the UK
Regards
Sarah M and Tommy
