Has anyone ever used supplements as preventatives? I've been having WAY too many migraines and due to current work and home situations, there is no way I have time to be sick trying new preventatives right now. I ask my doc about toradol injections to keep with me as rescue meds and he said my migraines weren't controled enough, but once we got them controled, he would agree to it.

Anyway, he said since I have a long list of drug allergies and have had problems with some of the preventatives, he put me on supplements that he said have had some success in some patients. He has me on 250 mg Magnesium and 300 mg. alpha-lipoic acid daily. So far so good-no problems tolerating them. He gave me oral toradol to keep with me also.

If anyone has had any experience with these and could give me some insight, I would greatly appreciat it.

On an update note, things at work are OK. Home is getting some better. DH(yes, the "D" is back in there)and I are doing better. We're setting time every night just to talk about us-not work or kids, but US. Things seem to be better and I'm actually optomistic that things will be OK. DH and his mid-life crises are doing better. My doc has been a wonderful Christian counselor and friend and I don't know what I'd do without him right now. He and his wife are some of my dearest friends and have been for a long time.

Lynn

Well, the important thing is that YOU are having success. I have heard of magnesium being effective as a preventive, but never the alpha-lipolic acid before.

I tried the magnesium, B12, and fever few routes, but didn't have success with them. Frowner

I hope it keeps working, and I hope your situation keeps getting better! Good Luck

Littlebit- I think, like medications, supplements can work for some people, and for some they do not. I've never heard of them being used as a straight preventive, just as a supplement, or an "aid" if you will, for migraines. They might help you, so I would give them a try, especially since your doctor has suggested it.
I'm so glad to hear about things between you and your husband. It sounds like he is willing to try to work things out. Keep us posted- thansk for checking in! Group Hug

I do believe for magnesium to be used in any type of preventive form, the dose has to be much higher. I'm going to double check on this.

I started out at 300mgs Magnesium and now I am currently up to 650mgs.

I also take 1000mgs of calcium to counter act the side effects of taking so much magnesium.....ah the joys of having to live your life though pill bottles!!! Razzer

My doctor suggested I take between 400 mg and 800 mg (at my discretion) of magnesium, and 400 mg Vitamin B12. These supplements have not helped with my migraine frequency, but they have definitely reduced the severity. As you can imagine, I'm very thankful for that.

I have not been given Magnesium yet as a supplement, only B-2, 400 mg. I can't really tell if it's making a difference or not. The few migraines I have gotten while on a prevenative, have been very mild, so maybe it is helping. I have not side effects from it, so taking it does not bother me.

Also, I'm glad to hear things between you and your husband are moving in a positive direction. That is good news. Please Lynn, don't sacrafice yourself in this. You are as important as he is. He needs to learn that.

Take care,

Cindy

Well, I've taken vitamin B2 in the past. Currently I take magnesium (400mg) and vitamin B6 (100mg) each day. That's the combo I've had the best luck with.

A lot of people don't get by on just supplements alone, though. That's always something to keep in mind and ask your doctor about.
