Hi everybody,
I had a great visit with my neurologist yesterday. We have increased the Verapamil to 240mg and added Amitriptylene 25mg for my Chronic Daily Headaches (transformed migraines). Within an hour of taking the new med, the weeklong headache had dissipated! (and it's still gone 24 hours later - and for me that's almost unheard of!) My question is...is 25mg the average dose? Have some of you started on less and titrated up? I am soooo sleepy! I took it early yesterday evening...just in case...and slept all night and have been incredibly sleepy all day. I'm ok with that (if it wears off, of course) but wondering if I should start off with half and move up in a few days.

I think we're finally on the right track...just need to stay awake...at least until the weekend!

Thanks

This is really a question for your doctor, and perhaps your pharmacist. Individual dosing of meds is highly dependent on personal body chemistry and physical makeup, so comparing doses is like comparing apples and oranges, so to speak. That said, it might be perfectly fine to start slower and work your way up. The only person who can help you decide on that is your doctor, though. It's not something that you should do on your own. I suggest you give him a call.

Like Dragondroolhost said this is a question your should be asking your doctor. Never change a medication dosage without discussing it with your doctor first since there could be side affects that you don't know of!!

For me when I was put on Nortriptyline I was put on 25mg to start with and found myself tired during the day so I asked my doctor about it. He said to take it at night and that this was a normal reaction to starting the med and I would get used to it hopefully within a month, which I did.

However like dragon mentioned "Individual dosing of meds is highly dependent on personal body chemistry and physical makeup, so comparing doses is like comparing apples and oranges" So again I say Talk to your doctor about it as soon as you can.

Thanks. Actually I did cut the pill in half for two nights. When I found I wasn't as sleepy, I ramped up to the full dose with no problem. Doing great now!

Yay!! I'm glad that you were able to cut the Amitriptyline tablet in half! I was on it for years, and when I had to taper off, I needed to split it the 25mg tablet. Oh, was that not fun... Seems like I'd wind up with the coating on one side of the blade and just powder on the other! Roll Eyes

Congrats on making it up to the 25mg dose! Hope it works for you!!
