I have been on Topamax for about 3 months. I am now experiencing breathing problems such as pressure in my chest and in my neck. Is this a common problem. I have a follow up with my DR in 9 days should I wait it out or call. I am assuming that it is related to the Topamax.

Welcome to the forum jacueline!

Although breathing problems are not at the top of the list of side effects for Topamax, it is listed as a side effect, and a serious one at that.

If I were you, and the condition is that of which you are having extreme pain and difficulty breathing, I'd see if you can get in sooner then 9 days from now.

Please keep us posted on this, ok?

Welcome again!

Welcome to the forum Jaculine

With any breathing problems such as you are describing, you should never wait around for your next appointment. The possiblity of serious problems is definitely there. I would call my physician immediately.

I felt like I had glass in my chest and had heart pains when my Topamax dose got to 75mg.

My Dr sent me for all kinds of tests which was very expensive, then argued with me if it was topamax. So i went off it without telling her. i did the titrations back down so it took me a couple weeks, as soon as I got to 25mg the heart/lung symptoms went away.

I am no longer taking topamax because even at 25mg I had other symptoms, shortness of breath, insomnia and a weird smell I could smell all the time. drove me insane.

Hope you find out what it is and feel better soon. i would call your Dr and not wait the 9 days.

I was on topamax 100 mg for over 6 months. My breathing got so bad that if I walked up steps or walked to fast I got what I thought was an asthma attack. The doctor said it was not due to the medication. I went off of if slowly anyway... They sent me for tests after I had been off it for awhile and all the tests came back normal....Before that my tests showed COPD go figure....

One medication that has helped with my daily headaches is Petadolex. I also take neurontin and replax for the bad migraines.

Just wanted to let you all know that I went to the doc on Wed. I had bloodwork taken and it turns out that my iron levels were extermely low. I started iron supplements yesterday and and the pressure in the chest and in the neck are completly gone today. I actually had this problem 20 years ago when I was pregnant and forgot about it. The low iron is due to the fact that I have had no appetite since being on the Topamax and I have lost 22 pounds. I have been able to maintain my weight the past 3 weeks though, so that is good news. Thanks for the support this week. jacqueline
