Hello everyone!
I am currently not seeing a doctor for my headache due to my life being in a state of chaos and flux, leaving my with no health insurance and little money. When my life is back in order I will find a new doctor but until then I'm trying to educate myself as much as possible about headaches and migraines and start a comprehensive headache diary to better understand my headache patterns. During this period of time where working with a doctor is not possible for me, I have been exploring methods to help my headaches that do not involve a doctor's help (elimination diet to identify triggers, mouth-guard at night etc). I have been wondering if supplements would fit into this category. Is it safe for me to experiment with supplements like magnesium, COQ10, butterbur, feverfew, vitamin B, vitamin D etc on my own, or are these substances that I should wait until I have an active relationship with a doctor to use? Suppements should be treated like any other medication, and should be taken only with your doctor's approval. There may be interactions to consider, or contraindications based on your health history. Some of them, such as Vitamin D, for example, can even be toxic. So, nope, it's not safe to experiement on your own.

Hi Nikki! It's nice to "meet" you.
I'm pretty sure this is considered a medical community, so the general consensus is going to be "check with your doctor first" on pretty much everything. As with everything (religion, politics, medicine) our individual experiences, culture, beliefs, etc all factor into everything we do and say, so you kind of have to know how you feel about that. For instance, I have always felt much safer with "natural" methods of medicine such as herbs and vitamins simply because I know more about them and felt at home enough with my body to handle those things on my own. It's the "safe" medicine that scares the crud outta me! Different strokes for different folks I suppose. The great thing I've found about this forum though is the wonderful support when you're having just the crummiest day and you really need a shoulder. These ladies (and I think a few men?) are here for you. It's a great resource. And for people like me who don't know anything about "real" medicine, it's a great place to learn a bit about that too! Welcome! |
