I had an appointment with my new neurologist a few weeks ago. It went well and I told her that my migraines were out of control again and that it seemed like the Topamax I was on was not working anymore. So she put me on Depakote, which was supposed to be taken at bedtime and make me sleepy. Well, it had the opposite affect on me. I was wired and unable to sleep and I felt anxious. So I called their office a few days ago and they changed my medication to Gapapentin. I took my first dose last night and it did make me sleepy, which was good.

Just wondered if anyone else has any experience with Gabapentin?

Hi Peggy,

I want to say that I tried Neurontin (Gabapentin), many, many years ago. That was before I knew about trialling a medication for three months to see if it would work and I'm sure I gave up on it way to quickly. I don't recall any adverse side effects but like I said, I don't think I was on it for very long.

You can take a look at this article for more information:

Neurontin

Good luck! I hope it works like a charm!

Yep. I've had some experience with this med, but not as a daily med. We tried it on an as-needed basis to try and squash migraine "fluff" like the numbness and brain fuzz and the like. It just made me feel weirder than the migraine fluff did in the first place. It's been a long time, but I think I tried it for around three to four months before we ditched it for good. I sooooo wouldn't go by my experience, though. Like I said, I didn't take it daily, and I tend to be pretty quirky with meds like Neurontin.

I've been on gabapentin for 2 days now and so far the main side effect I've had is dizziness in the morning. I've had a little bit of brain fuzziness too, but not nearly as much as when I was on Topamax. So I'll give it some more time and see if it helps.

Hey peggy,

This is the neurontin I mentioned huh, lol. You know that I was on it for quite a while. It didn't change my headaches enough to stay on it, but I did like that I had hardly any side effects on it. I am wishing you all the luck in the world with this med. I hope that it gets you to a better place than you are now!

A gentle reminder here - it can take up to three months to see a reduction in our Migraine frequency and severity while our bodies get used to new medications. Sometimes during this period we may experience some unwanted potential side effects. However, they may lessen as time goes on.

Thanks for the well wishes, Alaura! I'm giving it a try.

You're right, Nancy. I will have to give this some time. At least the side effects are not bad so far. I'm already starting to adjust to this medication and my Dr. has scheduled a dose increase starting tonight. I hope this one works out!

Well, I've been on Neurontin for a few weeks now and I'm starting to notice a few side effects. I wake up each morning with swelling in my hands, feet, and face. That is not such a big deal, especially since it goes away after a few hours. But I'm also noticing that my throat feels tight in the morning. Also, a few days ago I took a Relpax and the throat tightening effects lasted a really long time. I just called my Dr. and left a message about the tight throat. Even though I can still breathe ok, it is making me feel really anxious.

My Dr. called me back today and wants me to try Lamictal. I am going to do some research on the med, but at this point I'm desperate for some relief. I'm having daily migraines and my abortives are not working very well. Hopefully, I won't have any bad side effects from this med.

Good luck with the Lamictal, Peggy. I wasn't able to tolerate gabapentin, either. Hopefully this med will help without too many side effects! Fingers Crossed
