I am disappointed in how much imitrex costs but my neurologist said their patent is running out in the next year... Has anyone heard if that is true??? I would think that would make it possibly cheaper in a generic form Fingers Crossed... I take both imitrex and naproxen and he said they are also working on making a tablet that combines the two... Is this a myth??? I don't like taking pills - the less the better!!!

Yes, that is indeed true that the patents will be expiring. Teri wrote an article on this a little while ago, which you can find HERE.

Hope this helps.

Ah, the less the better but the reason they're combining them is to create a new drug to patent--to keep the price up, so my Dr. Breathtakingly Arrogant (who told me he invented Imitrex--NOT) told me. Yep. He told me that.

And yep, he said that he had not made enough money from his work on Imitrex. I could have choked when he said that, except that I was already gobsmacked from having listened to him say to me twenty times, "You don't know who I am, do you?"

Well, he knows who I AM now. Devil

MW,

I can share your cynicism, but that's really not the reason they're combining sumatriptan and naproxen. In the clinical trials so far, the combination tablet did better than the two medications taken in separate tablets. I don't understand enough pharmacology to really know why, but the results surprised me.

While I'm responding to you, may I ask a question? Why do you keep seeing this doctor?

There are two things we can expect: generic sumatriptan in 2009 or 2010 and the combination product, which is called Trexima.

MommyRhys, do you have prescription insurance coverage? Check out this web site:

www.pparx.org

Most programs are for people without any prescription insurance, but you may find some discount cards, etc., that anyone can use. Also, my doctor tells me to check web sites for the specific meds frequently. The web sites will sometimes have coupons that you can use, even to reduce a copay.

Is the Imitrex helping you? There are seven triptans, so if it isn't, try another (although another one would take longer to get to generic.)

Replying to nutcrackerHost question:

Yes I do have good medical insurance (for doctor visits, tests, etc) but some things lack in the broad scope of it all...Perscription medications NOT on their "formulary" list and their dental/vision ins. is not so good!!! I was just recently diagnosed and given medications but you made me think about looking at my husbands ins. program again. We already pay for his dental/vision ins. because it is better then mine but maybe his perscription coverage would be better. Got to stay on my ins. for doctors though way better then his!!! My vivactil super spendy too. Oh well. I am new and to this and will make decisions every day.

I am having a good day and will not complain about my meds anymore!!!! Thanks for making me think about my hubbys ins!!! Never had crossed my mind till now.

In the case of Imitrex plus naproxen, there is a good reason for the combo. Studies have shown the combination of the two in one tablet, formulated the way Trexima is, to be significantly more effective than taking each as a separate tablet.

As always, anyone considering taking such a combination should check with their doctor first.

A simple solution regarding naproxen and imitrex to save money: take each as a separate pill. I am very much opposed to any combo pills, even otc. Even if a patient needs the combo, the dosing might not be correct.

One big problem I encounter is combo pills for pain, eg percoset or vicoden. Each has 500 mg aceemophin or ibuprophen and about 5 mg of narcotic. The acetamophin/ibuprophen upsets my tummy something fierce. I do much better with 10 or 15 mg of morphine but I can't get a script for that for something like dental work.

Have you also checked on how much the other triptans would be on your coverage?

Or have you tried any of the others?

I know for me, Imitrex is the cheapest with the most pills per month, but it doesn't work that great for me.

Of course my head likes the more exspensive co pay stuff!! Roll Eyes

Oh and ask for samples girl! Even if you've been on it for a while, no shame in that! I just got a scripts worth of Frova from my neuro (not to mention everything else I take! Thumbs Up) just because I spoke up about it.

I take my Axert with naproxen as my specialist suggested. It really does work better for me as opposed to the Axert only. Sometimes if I feel it's not as effective I will swap to Excedrin for a short time. They don't like me using it though as it causes stomach upset generally.

My Axert Rx also dropped by $5 this month too, which is encouraging. If you buy a larger bottle of the Naproxen it'll last quite a while, so in the end you're saving money by taking them separately anyway. At least I am because I try to avoid the naproxen unless I my legs are having a cramping spell that they do every so often. But like Teri said, you should ask your Dr. first before trying it.

I also get extra abortive pills from my specialist when my Rx runs out--so it doesn't hurt to ask like Eileen says, especially if you live close to your dr.
