Has anyone taken Neurontin and Topamax as preventives at the same time?
My doc wants me to try it. I'm currently on 100mg topamax am and pm, and 240mg Verapamil daily. I also take 500mg Magnesium and 200mg CoQ10. He wants to add 300 mg Neurontin at bedtime. He said that's a small dose. My DH used to take it for neuropathy, and he was up in the thousands of mgs, so I'm pretty sure 300 is a low dose. I'm curious if anyone has any experience with Neurontin and Topamax together, and if anyone has had any success. Thanks! Be well, Melissa |

Well truth to tell Neurontin didn't work for me. It scares me. I had lots of side effects and some doctors never heard of before. I always weigh out the pro's and con's of anything. Topamax many warm me not to take also, but by itself I was fine.
But of course it had it's con's also. For me more pro's. See the thing is you know your body. Like for example: You like green beans but green beans don't like you. They are good for you but, they make you sick. So don't eat them. I'm no pro at this, I still have questions. Like why I couldn't take neurotin? Good luck I really hope it works for you. Hello Melissa dear
Yes I have taken both nuerontin and topamax. I actually had more side effects to the topamax than the Nuerontin. Although I didn't respond to either, but you know that everyone is different. 300mg is a small dose. My doc said that I was on a light dose at 2400mg a day. Did your doc say why he wanted you on both? Cuz they are both anti-seizure meds right? Good luck! I hope you get some releif soon. “Hope is the thing with feathers, that perches in the soul, and sings the tune without words, and never stops at all.” |

Hi Mel...
I was never on both at the same time, but I was on Topa for a couple weeks and Neurontin for about 3 months. The neurontin made me extremly depressed, and did no good for my migraines either. That doesn't happen to a lot of people, but I'm really sensitive to the psychiatric side effects of drugs. Probably b/c I'm already on Lexapro for depresson. 300 mg is a very low dosage, I think I started at 100 and went up to 300. I hope it works out for you! Sorry if this was fuzzy. Migraining right now, |

I've never taken Topamax, and I've never taken Neurontin daily, but I did take Neurontin on an as-needed basis to try and squelch the neuro fluff that came along with migraine, like the numbness and things like that. It was an interesting experiment. Neurontin made me feel really strange. I was buzzy all over, and my scalp felt like it was covered with electrified peach fuzz. It made my thinking a bit garbled, and I felt really odd, as if I was outside myself, looking on. I think I took it about twenty times with the odd symptoms before my neuro and I called it a wash. The side effects I had were mild and not intolerable, but they were so odd that they interfered with functioning. In the end we decided that it was probably better to try something else.

hey- i know i'm joining the convo a little late, but i'm on both neurontin and topamax.
i was originally put on neurontin for my depression but once i started with my new neurologist she started to also monitor my my neurontin. i take 1800 mgs daily, split it 600mgs 3X day. i am also on 300mgs of topamax. split that 100mgs 3X a day. i can tell you that the topamax definitely helps me with my migraines once i got to the dose that i am on now. as for the neurontin, i'm not so sure. I haven't had expeirence with them togeather, but I have taken Neurontin for a few months. It hasn't worked well, and my dosage has been changed frequently. 300 did nothing for me, 600 I got the side effects but it did nothing, and 900 it did a small amount of relief and I have been getting heavy side effects from it.

Hi everyone!
I am new to this forum, but have had migraines for seven years as a result of brain surgery. I was on both Neurontin and Topamax for two years--1800 mg Neurontin and 100-150 mg Topamax. I felt like a zombie--a very moody zombie. I recently discontinued both due to an issue with my liver. My daily headaches are more intense and my migraine frequency has ramped up to every 10 days or so, so I think they were both working somewhat, but not worth the side effects. I am now researchin surgical options--if surgery brought this about, surgery ought to be able to fix it! No Ache! Capt Deb |

I am also coming to this discussion late and for that, I apologize. I did want to offer my experience as I have realized that I am taking MULTIPLE meds that some of you are taking for preventatives but my Neuro has me on them for other reasons besides just my migraines (in other words, some are for migraine prevention, some are for fibro and some are for a preventative for another TIA yet they show up here as meds being taken for migraine preventatives!)
So, here is my list of what I am on: Topamax - 100mg - migraine prevention Neurontin - 1200mg - Peripheral Neuropathy Elavil - 150mg - Fibro pain and sleep issues Inderal - 80mg - Blood pressure, migraine prevention and to prevent further TIA's. So, you would think with all of this I would never get a migraine, right? Wrong! I still get migraines way too often for my liking. I average 1 per week with an average of 2 days per migraine although I have been in status migraineous (sp?) multiple times and had a 16 day whopper in September following a nasty fall and concussion in late August. I'm sure there are plenty others taking multiples like this but I did want to add my experience in. Take care, Kellye |
