I'll preface my question by apologizing if I sound a little scattered... I'm in the first month of Topamax and am definitely feeling fuzzy-headed!

I was told years ago that my magnesium levels were low, and I've taken magnesium off and on over the years. I also take epsom salt baths on a regular basis which are very helpful for my joint pain--you take in magnesium when you do this. I haven't seen any difference in my headaches when I've taken magnesium however... I've also taken Manganese... if anyone has heard of that. I met someone who had a profound difference in her headaches when she started taking (with permission of her doc) mass amounts of calcium--3,000 mg calcium citrate a day. She also mentioned a liquid calcium magnesium mix. Has anyone heard of/done this before?? I found this website which seems to reference a calcium connection. For those of you who are taking magnesium--how much do you take?

I personally take 250mgs of Magnesium. This is along with what is in my multi vitamin.

You should discuss with your doctor or pharmacist what dose would be right for you.

I personally take 600 mg magnesium, between my 500 mg magnesium pill and the 100 mg in my multivitamin. Most doctors feel you need to balance your magnesium and calcium intake, so they will recommend taking more calcium when you increase your magnesium. For me, at least, the calcium was not expected to have a direct impact on my migraines.

Please discuss with your doctor the proper dosages for you. As you can see, the dosages doctors recommend vary a lot depending on their philosophy and the medical history of the individual patient.

For what it's worth, and it isn't much, I take 400mg of magnesium. But I don't take any calcium, since I don't tolerate calcium supplements well.

I am not the norm, though, and as such, am a good example of the fact that we're all so very different in our med, supplement, and dosing needs. I don't think it does much good on forums to compare dosages, really. The info never really would make an impact on anyone else's personal situation and needs.

I take 200 mg of chelated magnesium twice daily, plus 100 mg of magnesium in my multi vitamin. The only calcium I take is in my multi (I don't remember how much is in there offhand).

I would definitely encourage you to talk to your doctor, as dosages are a very individualized thing.

I was just asking to see if anyone was actually taking Calcium as a migraine related supplement as I'd never heard of that before. I kinda got the feeling that the person I was talking to was an exception rather than the rule. I totally understand that supplements, just like any medication is going to require a different dosage and usage for each person.
