Hi everyone,

I already e-mail my doctor, but I wanted to ask you wonderful people for your options. I have been having different things happening that I think my be side effects from the verapamil. Let me explain.

I have been taking verapamil for 2 weeks now at night at a low dosage. I also have been in a migraine off and on for 8 days straight. The last couple days I have been really dizzy and my head feels heavy. My heart also seems to palpatate every once in a while.

Two nights ago, I got so off balance I fell. Yesterday, I could not seem to get off the couch without spinning. And my vision was way off.

I have been monitoring my b/p like my doc asked and it is fine, so I know that is not the problem.

I stopped taking verapamil last night and I do feel a little better today, not great, but better.

I get some of these symptoms with my migraines (vertiago, dizzness, motorweakness) but I never get them all day long. So, I am not sure if these are just migraines or verapamil side effect. And if it evetually goes away.

I am kinda bummed if it is the verapamil, because I think it was actually working for a little while. And it helped my IBS Wink

Thanks for listening

HeartDar

Hi Dar,

Sometimes it takes our bodies a while, like three months, to adjust to new medications. Two weeks is not a long time to be on a new medication, or give it time to really work. Potential side effects may lessen or go away after a while too.

Having said that, do you have a cold or virus that may be making you more dizzy? Just a thought. No grapefruit or grapefruit juice with this medication. While your body is adjusting to verapamil, you may have to be careful when you get up, no sudden movements or the like. Or course only if your doctor says to stay on this medication.

Hang in there.

Thanks Nancy,

Yeh, I was thinking the same thing that it takes at least three months, that's why I really don't want to give it up just yet. I will wait until the doctor e-mail back. Hopefully, it is just one of those side-effects that just takes time to get use to.

And no, not a virus. I will check and see if there is any hidden grapefruit in the gatoraide I drink or the things I eat. Interesting!

You know it is so weird. I normally eat a grapefruit once in a while. But I take zocor and my doctor said no grapefruit, he was pretty specific about it. I can't tell you how I am craving grapefruit now or at least a glass or juice. I feel like I am pregnant and craving oranges again!

How are you feeling?

Hi Dar,

When I first started taking Verapamil in April, it made me dizzy too. It also actually made my headaches worse! My doctor convinced me to hang in there. Within 2 weeks, my migraines had improved. My dr. prescribed it to me at night only to reduce the side effects. Good luck!

Hi Shayna!

Welcome to MyMigraineconection, and to our forum family! Glad you're here, but of course, sorry you have the need to be here. Migraines are awful beasts. I'm also on verapamil, and it's the first medication that's really made a noticeable difference in my quality of life migraine-wise!

Feel free to post in the introductions folder- it's nice to learn a little bit about our new family members as they come to the site- helps to make everything a little bit more personal and family- like

Lastly, give a holler if we (the hosts) can help you in any way!

Welcome again!

Hah! I totally understand this craving- I see them at the store, and my mouth starts to water. But, alas, they are truly the "forbidden fruit" for me and my verapamilized self.

I'm not supposed to eat grapefruit within three hours of my thyroid meds. But it's never an issue, since I hate grapefruit. Smiler
