Hello!
I have been taking 100mg of topamax for about 6 months now and thankfully am handling it very well. Even the tingling in my hands and feet only bothers me very rarely. However, I have noticed something strange and have not been able to find any information anywhere about a possible connection. Since I have been on topamax, my body has been covered in bruises. I have always been a relatively clumsy person and have always had a few bumps and bruises to prove it. But as summer approached and I pulled out my shorts, I realized I looked like I have been beaten. I have never seen anything like it. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Just looking for answers! Thanks! |

First off, hello and welcome to the forum family!
I just looked up Topamax info on Google, and found that easy bruising is listed as one of the rare side effects, so it is possible. I would approach your doctor with the info and your experience and see what or she thinks. Our Topamax Profile Link is Here For what it's worth, our link doesn't list bruising. You could always google and look at other listings, though, to find out how often it's listed. Dragondrool Forum Moderator ~~8=:>>>> |

I have also noticed an abnormal amount of bruising. I called my phamacist and he has not heard of it at all. My dr isn't aware of this as a side effect and rec that I start taking Vit K to help. I have only been taking TOpamax for 2 months and the bruises come out of no where - nudging ankle getting out of the car and getting an instant deep purple bruise. Even my physical therapist noticed.
Glad someone else has noticed and I'm not crasy ! |

I had a hard time finding vitamin K and had to settle for taking a multi-vitamin that had 100% of the daily allowance. This seemed to help some at first, but lately the bruises have started creeping back up. Don't know that there is really much more I can do about that.

Hi there,
Some of the whole food stores carry natural foods will have a vitamins section. Also iherb is a good resource for vitamins that you may be able to find Vit. K. |

I bruise pretty easy, too. I'll often find bruises on my legs from out of nowhere, even if I haven't run into anything. Once one of my doctors checked my vitamin K levels, but those were fine, so it's not a deficiency there. We finally chalked it up to the thyroid stuff, since quite a few thyroiders notice that they tend to bruise easily and unexplainably. There isn't really much you can do about it, other than to rule out known causes of bruising.

I also did a bit of research on bruising and topamax. It seems it does have the potentially but severeside effect of bruising. I used: Drugs.com a HONcode accredited site, meaning they comply with rigorous proceedures (like HealthCentral does) to obtain these creditials and the information they provide is trustworthy.

Well, I can't say for sure since I'm clumsy too! But my dh noticed a bruise on my leg and said, "Where'd you get that bruise?" and I said, "I have no idea!" after that I have noticed a few bruises that I don't remember bumping into things or falling down.
Something to keep my eye on but I can't say for sure it's the meds. I bump my big ole purse into my leg a lot too, so that could be it. I'm no help, am I?? LOL |

Since Nancy found bruising listed under sever side effects on that website I definitely think I am going to talk to my doc about it at my next appointment. The bruising was listed with other blood problems, so I really just want to make sure there is nothing else wrong.
On a side note, I have found that a good self-tanner helps make them not so obvious if you are still wearing shorts and short sleeves (we will be until November most likely in MS). I use Hawaiian Tropic Island Radiance - it is truly an awesome product. No orangey tan and no streaks if you apply well. |
