hi everyone! I have my very first accupuncture appt tomorrow (Friday) with my massage therapist's Husband who has a practice. She is very normal and not too out there, so hopefully he will be too.

I will make sure to ask for no spooning or cupping! I don't want all those bruises!

I am a little nervous but willing to give this a 4-6 month commitment to see if it can reduce the migraine. I'll report back and let you know what I think!

Claudine,

I'm so glad you decided to give it a try. I can't wait to hear how it goes for you. I saw the pictures in the other thread....I don't blame you for not wanting all those bruises.

Please let us know how it goes, k?

Good Luck Claudine. I'll be interested in hearing how it goes for you. I'm like you, I would not want to have all those bruises.

Take care,

Cindy

Hi Claudine,

Please do post back--I've been very curious if people usually feel a difference from the beginning... or if it takes a lot longer...

Good luck!

I am back from my first appt.!

I found it totally enjoyable! First we met and then we talked for a really long time. like an hour and half. we touched on all sorts of issues from emotional (my perfectionism) to physical symptoms like migraine, sinus and being thirsty all the time.

He explained how everything works and then did the Acupuncture which was very pleasant then he did some kind of energy work and I get into that stuff so I liked that. And then he did this very gentle tapping on my temples and scalp which felt amazing. Then I got a mini back massage, which I loved.

He did suggest that I cut back on the amount of soy I am eating because I guess soy can mimic estrogen and then can trigger migraine. I never thought of soy. Since I am a vegetarian I get most of my protein from soy so that will be tricky.

Also I can't drink Crystal Lite anymore because of the Aspartame, but that is OK by me. Thankfully I gave up diet coke 2 years ago because that would be a lot harder to give up!

He didn't say anything about Imitrex or even taking sinus medicine, so I am glad it's not "too natural" and isn't against using Western Meds. Because that would be bad.

I will see him again in about a week and do it once a week for a few times then go to once a month.

he gave me some Petadolex (Butterbur) to take which is a natural migraine remedy to reduce migraine frequency. We'll see! Keeping fingers crossed. I know lots of you have tried that w/o results but I am still hopeful.

I did feel very tired right after the appointment and am pleasantly sleepy now, which is very nice. I am going to give it a real 6 month commitment and see if I can't help this naturally.

I'll keep you posted!

I'm glad you found it so enjoyable. I do want to caution you to discuss the butterbur with your doctor before you try it. It's just as important to discuss "natural" supplements with your doctor as it would be to discuss Imitrex. Sometimes they interact with meds the doctor may have prescribed, and it can become a serious problem. Or, it may not be appropriate due to some other health condition you have.

Good luck as you continue these treatments.

going to my 2nd appointment tomorrow. So far hasn't helped with the migraine, but I figure it can take a couple months to really test.
will let you know how it goes.

Hi there,

I read your update with interest. I think acupuncture may be one of the only complementary therapies I haven't explored yet.

As nutcracker said, please check with your doctor when you take supplements. They are natural, but are drugs just the same. Butterbur has been shown to be effective for headache and Migraine prevention. However, it must be processed correctly or it can be harmful. Enzymatic Therapy’s Petadolex Pro – Active contains pure butterbur extract to support healthy blood vessel tone in the head, as well as normal blood flow in the brain. Click HEREfor information on a brand Teri takes.

hi everyone!

2nd appt was great. this time we also added needles to my neck and upper back, felt great. I could feel the release of tension, which was wonderful. I almost fell asleep.

there was one point in my arm that was a little tender, it was the "anti nausea point" (my words for it) so I guess that is why because I was so nauseas before the appt. maybe it was an extra active point.

I did end up with a migraine afterwards but I'm not blaming the acupuncture, I have been nauseous since last night so I figured I had a big old migraine coming on. He did help the nausea but the migraine train was already on it's way!

Nancy, yes that's the Petadolex that I am taking as well. only going to try it for a little longer he said and then we can stop if it's not working.

Overall I feel good about the Acupuncture and am going to give it a few months, even if it just reduces the migraines to a few a month instead of a few a week that would be great. i am not expecting miracles, just would like some help. we'll see. In any rate I am feeling better in other areas of my health so that's good!

I'll keep you posted!
