It seems to me I get some sort of preventaive that helps a little (from everyday migraines down to ten or so) and this preventative, plus abortives, makes me fuctional. But every two years, litterally, the preventative becomes less useful and then seems like it does not work at all. Every single time I have taken medical leave for it, in oder to find some replacement meds. Do preventatives become less effective as time passes and is it normal to have to change them every couple of years. I am currently at that two year point and things are not going so well, but I have neuro appointment in December, in which hopefully I can switch meds without missing work.

On a side note, I am on Lyrica as my preventaitve. When i started taking it, it cause a great deal of pain in my feet, once I got the dosage right it went away. That is also back, which my doc says can't be from the Lyrica since I have been on it for two years, but it is exactly the same sort of pain. Can a side effect come back after taking a med for awhile?

Hi Myth,

People can and do become tolerant of their preventive medication after a certain amount of time goes by, while others can go for years without any issues. It just happens, although we are not sure why.

As far as side effects coming back on a drug you've taken for a while, yes, this too can happen. Again not common, but can happen. Short story for you. I was taking bactrim for an ear infection about 8 years ago. I'd used this medication before and never had trouble with it - on the fifth day, BAM, my body decided it wasn't going to tolerate it anymore and I had an allergic reaction to it. Complete with breathing issues, flushing and et all....can't use that one anymore. So the two answers are yes!!
