Hello Teri and Nancy,

I have been in bed all summer with a migraine that will not go away. When I tried to get into my Neurologist, he had already closed his practice. (I received a letter indicating that he was going to be soon.) I was already into the migraine 5 weeks by then and when they referred me to another Neurologist, I couldn't get in until August 25th.

Well, she mentioned that I over use medications and that is why I have daily migraines and why some days are better than others. She told me to limit my migraine relief medication, which is difficult to do when your whole right side of your body is killing you. (Besides my head; my arm, leg, chest and back hurt too.) I lay in bed waiting to be able to take my next medication. She may be correct on this, but I was reading Teri's book about Hemicrania Continua and I believe that is what I might have been dealing with all summer. My question is this: Can you have Hemicrania Continua with migraines? So, let's say that you aren't going through the 3 month ordeal of a migraine and just have your normal migraines each month, until one hits you for several months. Could the migraine that turns into a daily migraine be a Hemicrania Continua? A couple of years ago, I had a 7 month migraine with the same symptoms. Daily right side throbbing pain, nausea, sensitivity to sound and light as well as this one. I always thought it was odd that I had stuffy nose, until I read this book and now I am wondering if there is something more than just migraines.

Thanks for any help!

Holly

Hi there and welcome to Mymigraineconnection.

Our goal is to provide everyone with the information and support that we all need to manage our Migraines and/or headaches. To that end, we consider this a “safe harbor,” where nobody tries to sell us anything, and we all use “family-friendly” language so parents are comfortable letting their children read the forum with them.

Please take a few minutes to review our policies and guidelines along with the other information in the START HERE folder. For information about Migraines, a good article to begin with is Learning About Migraines - Where to Start.

It is possible to have more than one type of Migraine or headache at the same time. Some people have Tension-Type Headache and Migraine with aura. What is most important, as you can see, is getting an accurate diagnosis, which may mean getting in to see a Migraine specialist. If your doctor isn’t able to help you, it may well be time to consult a Migraine and headache specialist. It’s important to note that neurologists aren’t necessarily Migraine and headache specialists. Take a look at the article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special[B] If you need help finding a Migraine specialist, check our listing of [B]Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists.

Now having said that, we don't currently have a Migraine specialist in UT, but some of our members travel great distances to see their specialists and are very pleased they do. Some go as far as WV to TX, NC to TX and so on.

Hemicrania Coninua is a primary headache disorder, lasting longer than 3 months and fully treatable with indomethacin. We have lots of good information on this condition HERE

Let me know if that helps, ok?
