Hi Teri,

I asked my HA specialist about PTC today, and she said she was perfectly willing to check it out in my case. She is going to send me for an aqueductal CSF flow MR study to screen for it - she mentioned that this is a newer method to test for it where only an LP was reliable before. Have you heard of this? I did some (very brief) Googling and saw some studies on the PubMed website, but I figured I would check with you as well.

Thanks for any info you might have. Thanx

Hmmmmmmmm. No, I haven't heard of it. I did speak with Dr. Young about PTC last June. At that time, he still said that an LP to measure the pressure was still the definitive test. That may have changed since then. I just don't know. It still makes sense to me that an LP would need to be done. If pressure is too high, they draw off enough fluid to put it in normal range before starting meds to keep it there.

Let us know what you find out?

Will do, Teri. I'm scheduled to have the MRI done on Friday afternoon. I'll see if I can dig up any more information on it, and of course I'll pass my results along. I'm a little skeptical, but it's not just a standard MRI scan so I'm willing to give it a shot and see what they find.

Thanks, Teri!

I wanted to give you an update on this, now that I have some more info.

I've since fired the doc (for a number of reasons) who sent me for this flow study. When I saw my new specialist, I asked him about this. He said that this type of MRI is *not* definitive for IIH, that only a lumbar puncture is.

My MRI did come back normal. My new doc has suggested we keep IIH on the back burner for now, something to look into further if we don't have much luck with the first few treatment ideas he has. I'm perfectly fine with this course of action, so that's where we are.

Thanks again, Teri!

MJ,

Thanks so much for the update! I didn't think there was anything short of measuring the pressure with an LP, but just couldn't be sure that there wasn't something new I hadn't heard about.

Hope you do really well with the new doc!
